Brazil said on Tuesday that the European Union plans to block beef imports from Brazil starting in September.
The decision comes only days after a major trade agreement between the EU and the South American trade group Mercosur started on 1 May. Mercosur includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
According to Brazil’s agriculture ministry, the government was surprised by the EU’s decision and will try to reverse it.
Brazilian media reported that the EU says it has not received enough proof that animal products from Brazil and other countries are free from certain antimicrobial substances. These substances can be used to help animals grow faster.
The Brazilian government will meet with EU officials to ask for more information about the decision.
The trade deal between the EU and Mercosur has already faced criticism in Europe. Some European farmers and environmental groups worry that cheaper imports could create unfair competition and affect environmental standards.
The agreement is currently being reviewed by the European Court of Justice. If the court rejects the deal, it could be stopped in the future.
The EU is an important market for Brazilian beef exports. In 2025, EU countries were the third largest buyers of Brazilian beef after the United States and China.
