Brian Sabean offered gratitude – both for the team that just let him go and just being part of a group being considered for immortality.

After four seasons as an executive assistant to the Yankees GM Brian Cashman, the organization decided not to bring him back for 2027. But his initial foray with the Yankees in the 1980s-90s would he had a huge hand in the development of the Core Four and later as the GM of three championship Giants team, Sabean built credentials that on Monday landed him as one of eight people on the Contemporary Baseball Era ballot for the Hall of Fame.

“I’m blown away. I’m beyond humbled,” Sabean said by phone. “It’s flattering because of the strength of the ballot. It’s such an august group. I think I’m the only person on it that’s not an icon in the sport.”

Two of the people that Sabean shares the ballot with, Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy, were hired to manage the Giants by Sabean. The others who made a ballot focused on managers and executives whose major contributions came during the late 20th century are Sandy Alderson, Joe Maddon, Lou Piniella, Ted Turner and Bill White.
