EXCLUSIVE: It’s a move that neither Victoria or David Beckham would have expected, but one of Brooklyn’s key allies has suddenly ‘changed his tune’ – at great cost to the ‘furious’ hot sauce founder
An important ally for Nicola Peltz and Brooklyn Beckham has done something of a U-turn after sparking fury with his astonishing revelations.
When Brooklyn Beckham, 27, posted his explosive statement on his Instagram in January, he finally confirmed the whispers that had been circulating for months: all was not well in camp Beckham.
He accused his parents of caring more about their public brand than their children, alleged that mum Victoria Beckham danced ‘inappropriately’ on him at his wedding to Nicola Peltz, 31, and said he had zero desire to heal the rift with his family. Victoria, 52, was said to be crushed by his claims.
Shortly after Brooklyn’s statement, an internet storm erupted with a flurry of memes posted at his mother’s expense. But, he found himself with a seemingly unexpected ally, DJ Fat Tony.
A longstanding member of his parent’s inner circle, the Beckhams were left shocked when Tony appeared on This Morning and dished on what had ‘really’ gone down during the wedding dance. The way he told it, it was singer Marc Anthony who came across as something of an agent of chaos during the tense moment.
Tony claimed that Marc had instructed “the most beautiful woman in the room” to come the dance floor, and then name dropped the former Spice Girl, leaving the bride seriously upset.
According to the DJ, the singer didn’t stop there, with Marc allegedly shouting out that Brooklyn should take hold of his mum’s hips. “It was a Latin thing,” Tony explained, arguing that it was the “timing” of the dance that was what was “inappropriate” and left Nicola fleeing the wedding reception in floods of tears.
But now Tony seems to have made a sharp U-turn. Speaking in a recent interview, he put the blame on the ITV show for the debacle, which was said to have left Victoria and David fuming at their old friend.
“It’s always sad when there’s a rift in any family. It just so happened that I got dragged into one. I went on [This Morning] to change a narrative of the word ‘inappropriate’ and where it was going for Victoria, where it was going for Brooklyn. It was not a nice situation,” he said.
He added that the family “are incredible and David and Victoria brought up those kids impeccably.” A source speaking to the Mail claimed that the Beckhams are none too impressed with this switch-up, even if the DJ is now speaking of them flatteringly.
“Fat Tony was seen as one of the main witnesses against Victoria at the wedding and very pro-Brooklyn and Nicola. Now look at how he’s changed his tune. The Beckhams are furious at all of this. Why on earth go on and slag them off? They were always close to Tony. He was their go-to DJ, but when they went with Hale Zero, [another DJ] that changed.
“There is so much hurt and sorrow wrapped up in the fallout with Brooklyn. For someone to stir it up the way [Tony] did was awful. And now he’s come out and praised them profusely. It’s baffling.”
Mayah Riaz, a PR to the stars, tells the Mirror that these new comments from the DJ will likely make the public, ‘reassess the whole narrative’. “From a crisis communications perspective, I’d say this is arguably a bigger win for David and Victoria than it is for Brooklyn and Nicola,” the communications guru explains.
“When Fat Tony first spoke out, it appeared to validate Brooklyn’s account of events and he was seen as an independent witness to a story that had largely been based on personal claims.
Mayah adds: “We know that public opinion is often shaped less by the original allegation and more by what happens afterwards. When someone who is perceived to be a neutral party starts rowing back and clarifying their position, or even expressing sympathy for the other side, it makes us reassess the entire narrative.”
The expert explains that amid this high-profile family feud, David and Victoria’s chosen approach of silence is likely to go a long way with their fans, projecting integrity. “I’d say that one of the biggest strengths of David and Victoria’s position throughout this saga is that they have largely avoided fighting the battle publicly. I always tell my clients that in PR terms, silence can be more powerful than rebuttal.
“While Brooklyn and Nicola have kept making their grievances public, David and Victoria have projected restraint and family loyalty. Whether that is entirely fair or not, it is often the image that resonates most strongly with the public.
“I feel there is also the issue of credibility. Every time a family dispute gains another chapter, there is a risk that audiences become fatigued by it. Yes, initially it did attract sympathy but eventually it can start to feel repetitive.
“The Beckham brand has always been built on unity, resilience and family. Every time David and Victoria refuse to publicly retaliate, they reinforce those values. The danger for Brooklyn and Nicola will be that the story becomes less about their concerns and more about why the feud is still being played out in public. It’s worth remembering that in celebrity PR, the person who looks calm often wins the room.”
When it comes to Fat Tony speaking up again, Mayah believes he has actually offered the couple a major gift in the drama around the estrangement. “What I find particularly interesting is that Fat Tony’s latest comments arguably give David and Victoria something they haven’t had for months and that is a narrative reset. The conversation is now not going to be solely about what happened at a wedding years ago. It’s now about whether the story has been amplified beyond its original significance.”
She also claims that when it comes to playing the PR game, Brooklyn’s candour and inexperience is starting to show, and might not get him the results he wants. “It seems that Brooklyn isn’t relying on professional support of a publicist or those in crisis management, as we see him speaking from the heart. Whereas David and Victoria have had years of experience in this as well as relying on that support.
“So it’s worth Brooklyn remembering that the biggest PR lesson for him is that public feuds are rarely won by the loudest voice. They’re usually won by the side that appears the most measured. Right now, unfortunately for him, it’s David and Victoria that look like the party focused on moving forward, while he risks looking stuck in the conflict.”
Tension brewed again recently when David Beckham paid a sweet tribute to all four of his children on Instagram for Father’s Day. Brooklyn was front and centre in the photos he posted, despite the ongoing rift.
A source close to Brooklyn claimed his parents’ decision to still post about him online, despite allegedly being asked to stop, is akin to ‘trolling’, a claim that a Beckham pal described as ‘ludicrous’. Brooklyn then stoked the fires again by seemingly taking aim at his parents a new DoorDash advert, reportedly leaving them ‘devastated’.
Meanwhile, Harper Beckham turned up unannounced at the home of brother Brooklyn and his wife Nicola earlier this month. The 14-year-old arrived alone at the property, having been driven by a chauffeur, only to find no-one was home. She is said to have left a handwritten note.
Had the Beckham-Peltzs been at their £14 million Beverly Hills mansion, it would have been the first time Harper had seen her oldest sibling face to face in 18 months. And her crestfallen expression as she walked back to the car indicated the toll that the rift between Brooklyn and his family is taking.
Tellingly, Harper made the impromptu visit on her own, having just after watching her father David receive the honour of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday. Her parents and two other brothers, Romeo and Cruz, were at the ceremony – but it was Harper alone who made the five-mile trip.
Shortly after Harper was seen at the mansion, a rep for Brooklyn and Nicola issued a brutal statement, claiming: “That photographers were in place as the letter was hand delivered says it all – this was choreographed for the cameras.”
