Hyderabad: A new centre of excellence (CoE) focused on next-generation communication technologies has been established at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) through a partnership with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), the telecom research and development arm of the Union telecommunications department (DoT).
The collaboration is intended to accelerate research, innovation and skill development in advanced communication technologies, including 5G Advanced and 6G networks, quantum communications, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence-driven telecom applications. C-DoT has established similar facilities at IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Roorkee.
According to officials, the centre will serve as a hub for research and prototype development in areas such as very large-scale multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, integrated sensing and communication technologies, AI-enabled communication networks and devices, and quantum and post-quantum communication systems.
C-DOT and IIT Hyderabad already have an existing collaboration through WISIG, an IIT Hyderabad-incubated start-up working on disaggregated 5G Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) solutions.
C-DOT Chief Executive Officer Rajkumar Upadhyay said the centre would help create a strong innovation pipeline for future communication technologies by combining academic research with deployment capabilities. IIT Hyderabad director Prof. B.S. Murty said the institute’s expertise in communication engineering, semiconductor technologies and wireless systems would complement C-DOT’s efforts to develop secure and indigenous telecom solutions.
