Calallen found itself in an unfamiliar position Friday night.

Trailing by multiple runs after the first inning, the defending state champions were forced to play from behind in Game 1 of the Class 4A Division I state semifinals at Buda Johnson High School.

But like they have all season, the Wildcats responded with dominant pitching and a late rally to defeat Bullard 4-3 in eight innings.

The victory gave Calallen a 1-0 series lead with Game 2 slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30 back at Buda Johnson.

How the game unfolded

Bullard struck first behind Ty Rigsby’s two-run home run, Gage Alderman added an RBI double in the first inning to give the Panthers an early 3-1 lead.

But Coll Carroll, who has shined all season for the Wildcats, took over from there.

Carroll delivered six strong innings, allowing three hits and striking out 12 as Calallen increased its winning streak to 25 games.

The Wildcats broke through in the sixth when Reese Rusher singled and later scored on Drayton Mitchell’s RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Two batters later, Blake Quinn hit an RBI single to score Drayson Gamez and tie the game at three.

In extras, Mitchell drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and advanced to third on a passed ball. Wyatt Duke followed with the game’s biggest hit — a go-ahead RBI single to score Mitchell.

Jimmy Tipton III handled the final two innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced.

Dallin DeBellas led the Wildcats with three of the team’s 12 hits.
