Shedeur Sanders has been named as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns this weekend as they face the New Orleans Saints.

Todd Monken confirmed on Friday that it would be Sanders taking the starting role for the Browns, with Deshaun Watson working his way through the concussion protocol following the recent loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Sunday will mark the first start of the season for Sanders, who has been forced to watch from the sideline after Watson won the job over the offseason. However, the controversial young quarterback now has the opportunity to prove himself under Monken in a game situation.

Given the impressive season Watson has enjoyed so far for the Browns, former NFL quarterback Cam Newton has laid out exactly what it would take for Sanders to make the starting role his own.

So far this season, Sanders has only thrown three passes across two games in the NFL. The 24-year-old completed both of his passes last weekend when he came into the game against the Steelers, and he has shown his confidence ahead of the game against the Saints.

“The only way I see Shedeur Sanders starting for the rest of the season if they exceed any type of benchmark that was set like if I think it was like 300 yards plus,” said Newton on his YouTube channel.

“If they have a 400-yard offensive day, oh man, we got to reconsider some stuff.”

The chances of that happening against the Saints may not be as unlikely as Newton may think, though. The New Orleans Saints’ defense has allowed 372 yards of total offense per game on average this season.

However, even with Watson at quarterback, the Saints have only managed to average 301 yards of total offense per game this season. So, sealing a 400-yard game with Sanders at quarterback would certainly be something.
