The St. Louis Cardinals are having an incredible 2026 season. After trading away the majority of their veteran core over the offseason, the 2026 season was meant to be a rebuilding year.

Instead, things are going so well that the Cardinals fanbase kick-started what’s become a viral celebration of fans taking off their shirts and swinging them around in the air. At 29-22, the Cardinals are in a playoff spot and might be legitimate contenders this season.

However, Chaim Bloom and the Cardinals are likely to sell at the trade deadline. At least, that was what seemed to be the case. MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today revealed a fun projection for the Cardinals’ trade deadline.

Cardinals could have a very different trade deadline than expected

“They’re currently not going to be buyers at the deadline,” Nightengale writes, “but if they remain in the hunt, may have no choice but to stay pat, knowing their future could be a lot sooner than anyone anticipated.”

While it’s hard to imagine a scenario where the Cardinals act as buyers at the trade deadline, there’s nothing saying this team could stand pat and not sell like expected.

Coming into the year, it was well within the realm of possibility for Bloom to sell off a few more key veterans at the deadline to recoup more value and prepare for the future.

That might change this year, with the Cardinals instead keeping some of their key players and standing pat through the deadline if they keep up this red-hot pace through the August 3rd deadline.

It’s far from a guarantee that the Cardinals will be able to keep up this hot start, but if they’re still in a playoff spot by the deadline, it’s possible this projection from Nightengale comes true, and the Cardinals don’t actually sell at this year’s deadline despite prior plans.
