PUNE: Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest car maker, delivered over 30,000 cars to buyers across the country on Dhanteras day on Friday, starting a strong pitch for the Diwali peak sales starting from Nov.8.

The maker of Baleno and Swift models expects to sell more than 70,000 units during the extended festival period this year.

“We are expecting to deliver around 30,000 vehicles on Dhanteras this year,” said Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer, marketing & sales at Maruti Suzuki India.

He said the strong momentum is not limited to one day. “From Ganesh Chaturthi on Sept.14 to Nov.6, we have already recorded retail sales of over 4 lakh vehicles, compared to 3.46 lakh units during the same period last year,” Banerjee noted.

He said both minor model changes, Brezza and Baleno are getting a very good response. “Within a span of just two months, Baleno sales have crossed 50,000 mark and Brezza 70,000 with both recording huge pending bookings,” Banerjee said.

Similarly, Tata Motors said Dhanteras saw an outstanding response, with single-day deliveries expected to cross 12,000 vehicles. “Diwali muhurat deliveries will continue till Wednesday, and we expect this momentum to carry into the coming days,” said Amit Kamat, chief commercial officer at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.

Since Ganesh Chaturthi, he said the company recorded retail growth of over 20 per cent compared with the same period last year, reflecting the strength of underlying demand.

Mahindra and Mahindra, the SUV specialist, also saw strong demand for its cars. “We are witnessing very strong demand across our SUV portfolio during the festive season. Based on Vahan registration data for comparable festive days, starting from Navratri, Mahindra has been the fastest-growing brand over the approximately 25-day period tracked so far,” said Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director and CEO at Mahindra & Mahindra.

He said this strong momentum is also reflected in our dealership inventory, with physical SUV stocks close to zero across most of our portfolio and less than eight to nine days of stock, excluding vehicles in transit.

“We are operating at full capacity, with our October volumes exceeding the capacity levels we had indicated earlier,” Jejurikar said, adding the electric SUV portfolio also witnessed strong demand through October.

The automaker has maintained a mid-to-high-teen growth outlook for Mahindra SUVs in FY27.

“Dhanteras and Diwali are one of the most auspicious days to bring home a new vehicle and we are witnessing strong customer demand this year,” said Tarun Garg, MD & CEO at HMIL.

Hyundai expects to deliver around 16,000 units on Dhanteras, nearly 14 per cent higher than last year, he added.
