Former Countdown legend Carol Vorderman said one of her marriages “doesn’t count” as she reflected on her relationships and current love life
Carol Vorderman has claimed that her first marriage was “a rebound” and admitted to borrowing two dresses for the occasion. The former Countdown star tied the knot with Christopher Mather in 1985, but the marriage ended just a year later. Four years on, she married Patrick King, with whom she shares two children, before the couple divorced in 2000.
Speaking on A Night In with Sally Lindsay on Channel 5, Carol opened up about her current love life and past marriages.
Touching on the subject of weddings, Sally said: “So, I heard a story that when you first got married, you nicked your dress from the wardrobe of 3-2-1 (the game show), is that true?”
In response, Carol said: “That was my first wedding, [I’ve had] two, that one didn’t count though, I had only known him weeks, 14 weeks. I was on the rebound and I thought, ‘yeah, yeah’.”
Discussing the wedding further, Carol explained that she borrowed not only her wedding dress but also her evening outfit.
“That [her second marriage] was very much a proper marriage, but the first one, I borrowed the wedding dress and I borrowed the evening dress.
“So I borrowed my dress for the evening from the costume cage from 3-2-1 and it was all mesh with sequins in the right places and then I got on stage and sang It’s Raining Men, as the bride.”
Carol has previously joked that performing such a song on her wedding night may have contributed to the marriage ending shortly afterwards.
As for her second husband, she has never publicly disclosed the reasons behind their separation, though has expressed regret over their divorce.
“I never said why my marriage broke down and we’d agreed never to talk about it publicly. The divorce is a regret of mine and my mum thinks that we should have stayed together,” she told Woman Magazine.
“He’s now remarried so there’s no chance of us getting back together. Had my career not taken off like it did, Paddy and I probably wouldn’t have split up.”
Reflecting on the experience, she added: “I never want to get married again.”
Carol has not remarried since her split from Patrick and has spoken openly about no longer pursuing monogamous relationships. Instead, the presenter says she has several “special friends” with whom she enjoys spending time.
Providing an update on her love life, Carol went on to say she has no desire to settle down and is “very happy” with how things are.
“I couldn’t think of anything worse right now,” she said of the prospect of a relationship.
“I love seeing mates, I’ve got lots of great mates. I have a great social life, I don’t need anyone for money, I don’t need anyone for anything really, other than the nice bits,” she laughed.
