Caulfield Cup marred by two falls – including former winner

Kingswood’s Caulfield Cup win has been marred by a fall on the home straight involving last year’s winner Half Yours and another involving Ohope Wins.

I saw Half Yours being led up the straight by his strapper. He seemed to be fine.

But we’re told there is some concern for Ohope Wins.

I watched the race behind the connections of Half Yours, and they’re in disbelief. A few of the owners are in tears, having been excited just moments earlier.

There are also concerns on-course for jockey Mark Zahra, who was riding Half Yours, who was brought down in a fall. He is being attended to on the track, but it does appear Half Yours escaped unhurt.

Half Yours was chased down by the clerk of the course and is currently being looked at by the trainers.

Half Yours’ trainer, Tony McEvoy, has told connections that his horse – the reigning Melbourne Cup champion – is OK. He also relayed to connections that both jockeys are OK.

The main concern is now with the other horse that fell, Chris Waller’s Ohope Wins.

Stewards will look into what caused the fall, and we’ll bring you updates as they come.

Victoria Jockeys Association chief executive Matt Hyland said both jockeys, Zahra (Half Yours) and Jye McNeil (Ohope Wins), are OK.

Stewards said Zahra would be sent to hospital for assessment and that he was conscious and alert.

McNeil got to his feet after the fall and will be assessed by the on-course medical team.

Stewards will look at the footage and investigate the cause of the fall. On first watch, jockey Rachel King and her mount Green Spaces were involved in the incident.
