NEW DELHI: The CBI on Thursday arrested an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer posted with the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) and two others for allegedly demanding a Rs 1 crore bribe from a politician-businessman in connection with an investigation linked to the Rs 34,000-crore DHFL loan fraud.

The accused were identified as Harish Kumar Tanwar, a 2017-batch IRS officer posted as deputy director at SFIO, Chennai; Delhi-based advocate Bharat Sharma; and his relative Aryan Sharma.

According to the CBI, Tanwar and Sharma allegedly demanded Rs 1 crore from the complainant in exchange for favouring him in the SFIO investigation.

“After verification of the complaint and registration of the FIR, the CBI laid a trap and arrested a deputy director-level officer of SFIO, one Delhi-based advocate and another private person after the advocate received an undue advantage of Rs 20 lakh from the complainant as part payment of the demanded bribe of Rs one crore, for and on behalf of the SFIO officer,” a CBI spokesperson said.

The agency conducted searches at premises linked to Tanwar and Sharma and seized material relevant to the investigation.
