NEW DELHI: The CBI has coordinated the extradition of Sajeer Palli Mooppam, wanted by Delhi Police in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a 20-year-old woman, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Officials said on Wednesday that the accused was traced to the UAE after Interpol issued a Red Notice at the request of the CBI, acting on information from Delhi Police.

According to the CBI, the accused and an accomplice allegedly administered an intoxicating substance to the woman, leaving her incapacitated.

Mooppam allegedly took the woman to a hotel and checked in using another person’s identity documents to evade detection. He then sexually assaulted her, the agency alleged.

A CBI spokesperson said medical and forensic reports corroborated the allegations and that a chargesheet had already been filed before the competent court.

The accused was traced and arrested by UAE authorities following a request from the CBI.

After completion of the legal formalities, UAE authorities handed him over to a Delhi Police escort team, which brought him to New Delhi on Wednesday.

The CBI said more than 278 wanted criminals had been brought back to India since 2019 through coordination with foreign law enforcement agencies.
