NEW DELHI: The CBI has arrested a constable posted at its Bank Security and Fraud Branch (BS&FB) in New Delhi and a lawyer in an alleged Rs 6-lakh bribery case following an internal anti-corruption operation.

The action came after the agency received information that constable Jay Kumar Singh, in connivance with a middleman, had allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh from Kolkata-based businessmen Ram Chandra Daga and his son Basant Daga in return for not implicating them in a case, officials said.

The CBI launched surveillance on the constable’s alleged activities as part of its “zero tolerance” policy towards corruption and its internal counter-graft mechanism, they said.

It registered an FIR against six persons, including the constable, the businessmen, the middleman and others, under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to the FIR, Singh allegedly visited Kolkata on September 21 on “an official visit” and met Ram Chandra Daga, claiming to have information about alleged illegal activities involving him and others.

It was also alleged that he met Daga’s lawyer during the visit to discuss the issue, after which the lawyer recently travelled to New Delhi “to amicably settle the matter”.

The agency alleged that the West Bengal-based middleman was fully aware of the matter and was also expecting a share of the bribe.

At a meeting in a mall in southwest Delhi last week, the constable allegedly negotiated the bribe amount down to Rs 6 lakh, officials said.

The CBI, which was tracking the movements of those involved after receiving information about the possible bribe exchange, dispatched a team from its Anti-Corruption Unit on Sunday.

The team swooped down on the location and arrested the constable and the businessman’s lawyer, officials said.
