The CBSE South Zone (SZ-1) Boys Chess Championship 2026 concluded successfully at Pallavi Model School, Boduppal, after four days of intense competition.
The tournament, conducted over six rounds, witnessed participation from 213 schools across four states, with a total of 849 players competing in three age categories — Under 11 (211 players), Under 14 (485 players), and Under 19 (153 players).
The valedictory ceremony held on July 30, 2026, was attended by K. S. Prasad, National Chess Chairman, and A. J. Chandra, General Secretary of the Telangana Chess Association, as chief guests. Other dignitaries included Sushil Kumar, Director of Pallavi Group of Schools, Tanuja, Principal of Pallavi Model School, Boduppal, and R. Chandramouli, International Arbiter.
The championship saw dominant performances by Chennai-based schools across all categories.
In the Under 11 category, Velammal Vidyalaya, Mangadu, Chennai, emerged as champions, followed by Velammal Academy, Nolambur, Chennai, while Velammal Vidyalaya, Paruthipattu, Avadi, Chennai, secured third place.
In the Under 14 category, Velammal Vidyalaya, Mangadu, Chennai, clinched the title, with Velammal Academy, Nolambur, Chennai, finishing second and Velammal Vidyalaya, Paruthipattu, Avadi, Chennai, taking third place.
In the Under 19 category, Velammal Vidyalaya, Porur, Chennai, was crowned champion. Bala Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Adyar, Chennai, secured the runner-up position, while Kalvi International Public School, Rajagambeeram, Madurai, finished third.
The championship concluded on a high note, celebrating sportsmanship, strategic excellence, and the growing popularity of chess among school students, with participants and organisers receiving appreciation for the smooth conduct of the event.
