A vibrant celebration of art unfolded at Kalagram, Chandigarh, with the National Sculpture Camp-2024, which ran from November 4 to November 23. This year’s theme, “Zodiac Signs,” invited 13 talented sculptors from various states across India to bring astrological symbols to life through their craft.

The camp, organized by the North Zone Cultural Centre under the Ministry of Culture, showcased a diverse range of sculptures, each representing one of the twelve zodiac signs. Artists hailing from regions such as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Ladakh, and Delhi participated, contributing their unique styles and interpretations.

Among the notable pieces was a giant crab being sculpted by Narinder J S Maloya for the sign Cancer, while Simarjeet Sekha crafted a robust lion for Leo. Other artists tackled different signs: Ajesh Kumar Kandalloor shaped Aries with its iconic horns, and Sanul Kuttan worked on Gemini by sculpting two human figures. Mohammad Iqbal focused on Libra, creating a weighing scale that symbolizes balance.

The event attracted art enthusiasts and students alike, providing them an opportunity to engage with the artists and witness the creative process firsthand. Jagdeep Jolly’s innovative Zodiac circle in fiberglass drew significant public interest, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the camp.

This initiative not only promoted sculpture as a vital art form in India but also emphasized the importance of artistic expression and cultural heritage. The successful exhibition underscored how each sculptor sought to make “each piece of stone talk,” transforming raw materials into narratives that resonate with viewers.
