Hyderabad:The self-enumeration phase of Census 2027 will be launched in Telangana on April 26, Sunday, enabling citizens to fill in their details online as part of the first stage of the nationwide exercise. Tthere will be no provision to mention caste or religion during this phase, with only broad categories such as SC, ST and Others being captured. The self-enumeration window will remain open until May 10.

Following this, Census officials will undertake household visits from May 11 to June 9 to verify the data submitted online. During the self-enumeration phase, citizens will be required to answer 33 questions primarily focused on housing conditions and assets, rather than individual demographic details. The latter, including socio-economic characteristics such as caste and religion, will be collected during the population enumeration phase scheduled for 2027.

After a gap of 16 years since the last Census conducted in 2011, the Centre has introduced a fully digital enumeration system that allows citizens to directly participate through a process known as Self-Enumeration (SE). This marks a major shift in the Census process, placing greater responsibility on households to provide initial data.

Director of Census Operations-Telangana, Bharathi Hollikeri, reviewed the arrangements for the self-enumeration phase at a meeting held on Monday, assessing the preparedness of officials for the upcoming exercise.

According to a notification issued by the Union home ministry, Census 2027 in Telangana will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, comprising house-listing and housing census, will take place between April and June.

Within this timeline, Telangana has been allotted a 15-day self-enumeration window from April 26 to May 10, followed by a 30-day house-listing period from May 11 to June 9. The second phase, involving population enumeration, will be conducted in February 2027, during which officials will visit households to collect detailed demographic and socio-economic data.

A senior Census official stated that self-enumeration is optional but is being actively encouraged, particularly among urban households familiar with digital platforms. He stated that the online process does not replace the traditional door-to-door enumeration but complements it by pre-filling household data. During subsequent visits, enumerators will verify the information using a unique self-enumeration ID, thereby reducing omissions and minimising the time spent in each household.

Officials advised residents to use a personal mobile number that will remain active throughout the Census period, as it will be linked to the household’s login credentials and may be required for future corrections. Residents living in multi-storey apartments or rented accommodations have also been urged to keep their exact postal address and local body details ready to ensure accurate mapping of their household to the appropriate enumeration block and ward, which is essential for precise data collection and planning.
