ANANTAPUR: A series of chain-snatching incidents at five places in Anantapur on Tuesday triggered panic among residents and raised concerns over policing lapses. CCTV footage showed motorcycle-borne snatchers targeting women and fleeing with their gold chains.
According to sources, general store owner K. Lakshmi of Vadiyampeta, under the B.K. Samudram police station limits, was sweeping outside her shop when a man approached her on the pretext of making a purchase and allegedly snatched her 5-tula gold chain. The man fled with two others on a motorcycle after the incident.
The gang also targeted women walking alone in Vinayak Nagar, Sai Nagar, Rudrampet Bypass and another location under the B.K. Samudram police station limits.
B. Syamal of Sai Nagar was walking on the main road when three motorcycle-borne persons approached her and allegedly snatched her gold chain. “Within a minute they dragged my chain and escaped,” she said.
The gang also targeted elderly women in other areas.
Police teams launched a hunt for the suspects based on available CCTV footage.
