Huw Edwards could be set for a television comeback after the disgraced presenter was sacked from his role at the BBC in 2024 after being convicted for sex offences

Channel 4 is in talks with Huw Edwards for a tell-all programme, according to reports. The channel is said to have discussed the potential show with the disgraced newsreader.

The former BBC man is said to be wanting to “state his case” after being convicted for sex offences. In 2024, Edwards admitted to possessing 41 indecent images of children. Seven of those images were classed as the most serious category A abuse, while two of the images were of victims aged seven to nine years old.

A judge handed Edwards a six-month sentence suspended for two years. He had been suspended from his role with the BBC a year earlier.

Now, with the claims of a tell-all programme potentially incoming, an employee has described the idea as “a desperate publicity stunt”, according to The Times.

Any production would follow a Channel 5 dramatisation in March. Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards aired, but was criticised by the former presenter, who called it a “one-sided account”.

He said after its release: “Other opportunities will arise later this year for me to state my case and to challenge the misleading or fabricated claims made in recent coverage.

“Serious questions still remain to be answered, and not just by me. It will now take some time for me to produce my own account, and until then I do not intend to comment any further.”

In a previous statement, he had slammed the Channel 5 drama, saying at the time: “[They] made no attempt to check with me the truth of any aspect of their narrative before going ahead with the production. A number of serious questions still remain to be answered, and not just by me. It will now take some time for me to produce my own account, and until then, I do not intend to comment any further.”

After his comments, Channel 5 said the programme was based on “extensive interviews with the victim and his family”. They said court reporting was also used to form it.

In December, speculation was sparked that he could be preparing to make a TV comeback. The fallen BBC newsreader posted a brooding professional portrait online at the time. And he also pulled his £4.75million family home in Dulwich from estate agent websites.

One follower of his account online noticed his professional looking headshot. They wrote, ‘Is he on the comeback trail? Why else would he suddenly get a professional portrait done?

They added, ‘Surely he can’t think that a well-lit headshot and a scrap of stubble will soften the memory of everything that’s happened.’

Edwards was one of the BBC’s highest-paid newsreaders before he was sacked. He was known for presenting the BBC’s News At Ten for decades, before pleading guilty to making indecent images of children in July 2024.

The Mirror has contacted Channel 4 for comment.
