The entertainment world is in a state of mourning after news broke about the death of actor, Charles Cioffi. For those unaware, he was best known for his work in classics like Shaft and Klute. He was reportedly 90 years old when he took his last breath.

The news of Charles Cioffi’s death was revealed by the actor’s wife, Anne, on May 27, 2026. Despite this, according to a report by TMZ, Charles had actually died a few days ago, on May 22, 2026, at the age of 90. The reports suggest that he passed away at his Marina del Rey home in California, surrounded by his family. Coming to his cause of death, Charles passed away from natural causes.

Within a few minutes of the announcement of Charles Cioffi’s death, his fans began taking to social media to share their tribute. A user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “No way! Played Ernesto Toscano on Days of Our Lives and was the Section Chief on X-Files. RIP.” Talking about his classic movie, Shaft and the actor’s performance in it, another user shared, “Shaft (1971) captured a New York City that no longer exists — raw, dangerous, alive. Charkes Cioff was part of that magic. Every actor in that film helped build one of the greatest urban thrillers ever made.” A third user penned, “RIP Charles Cioffi. 90 is a long run. Rewatching those classic films beats today’s committee-written slop Hollywood keeps shipping.” A fourth comment read, “10 more years on earth would have made him 100 years old…rest on legend.” A fan of the actor wrote:

More about Charles Cioffi 

Charles Cioffi was born in New York City on October 31, 1935. In the early 1960s, he launched his show business career on the stage of the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. Later in that decade, in 1968, he made his Broadway debut in a production of King Lear, which starred Lee J. Cobb. According to a report by Deadline, Charles Cioffi had performed in seven Broadway productions. This includes the original 1969 production of 1776, a 1975 production of Hamlet, featuring Sam Waterson in the titular role and Jane Alexander as ‘Gertrude.’ For his final Broadway credit, he had performed in the 1992 two-hander Chinese Coffee, alongside Al Pacino.

In addition to his career on stage, Charles Cioffi was simultaneously making a name for himself in television. He began his career in the same with a role on the 1969 CBS soap, Where the Heart Is, followed by his early signature role as ‘Lt. Vic Androzzi’ in Shaft in 1971. He had also appeared in episodes of Little House on the Prairie, All My Children and Another World, Kojak, Wonder Woman, The Six Million Dollar Man, Thirtysomething, The X-Files, and Law & Order, among others. Reportedly, his television career lasted several decades.

In the same year that Charles made his film debut, he got the opportunity to appear in the hit thriller, Klute. The film stars Jane Fonda as a New York City prostitute called ‘Bree Daniels,’ and Donald Sutherland as the amateur detective, ‘John Klute’, in charge of investigating the disappearance of a businessman who also happened to be one of ‘Bree’s’ clients. Meanwhile, Charles played an executive at the company where the missing man in question used to work. The film is known for its climactic scene in which Charles’ character is revealed to be a killer. He attempts to murder ‘Bree,’ before dying by suicide after jumping from a skyscraper.
