Fans of Charli XCX have been left “freaking out” after learning how old the singer really is. The Apple singer is celebrating her birthday today (2nd August), and many of Charli XCX fans will be taking to social media throughout the day to send her messages of support on her special day – but some are only just finding out her age.
Older fans will know that Charli – whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison – has been a musician for over a decade at this point. However, many of her younger fans may be under the impression that she only started her career with the release of her 2024 mega-hit album, Brat, meaning they’re stunned when they realise she isn’t as young as they think. This comes just after they also learned what the letters in her stage name really mean.
For those not in the know, the 365 singer is turning 34, making her a Millennial. And for some fans online, that’s something they can’t compute – as they believed she must be Gen Z.
One person posted on Reddit: “I’ve already seen several Gen Z freak out on Twitter this morning because they didn’t realise one of their faves was a Millennial.”
Another added: “How old are these people who don’t remember she had a massive hit in 2012/13? Then I remembered, if you’re 17, you were five then.”
A third wrote: “It’s so funny, they seem to think anyone over 25 shrivels into dust.”
The age range for generations can change depending on which source you look at, but generally, Millennials are born between 1981 and 1996, while Gen Z is generally defined as those born between 1997 and 2012. As Charli was born in 1992, she is firmly in the Millennial bracket and is not Gen Z, no matter how much her music might resonate with a younger audience.
As several fans pointed out, Charli has been in the music scene for years, beginning her career by posting songs on MySpace back in 2008, when she was just 16. She then had her breakout hit when she co-wrote and featured on Icona Pop’s 2012 hit I Love It when she was 20.
Throughout the 2010s, she had several other hits, including featuring on Iggy Azalea’s Fancy in 2014 and releasing her own hit singles, including Boom Clap and Break the Rules.
In fact, her 2024 album Brat, which became a viral sensation and spawned the phrase “Brat summer” that was used to describe being confident and carefree, was her sixth studio album – despite some fans thinking it was her debut.
Another Reddit post shared after the release of Brat pointed out that even though the album explores themes of turning 30 and not wanting to settle down, it seemed to be marketed more toward a Gen Z audience.
The poster shared: “Her latest album ‘Brat’ is basically about turning 30 as a party girl and refusing to wind down, but the media is treating it and the hype around it as a Gen Z phenomenon.
“I guess it makes sense because it is popular with Gen Z, but it feels like not acknowledging how distinctly millennial the album is ignores a big part of what the record represents.”
