If you grew up in the late 1990s or early 2000s, chances are you remember Cheaper by the Dozen and its chaotic family of 12 children – here’s where the stars of the show ended up
It’s a family-favourite movie – and difficult to believe it’s more than 20 years old already. Cheaper by the Dozen was released back in 2003 and quickly became a hit with families, following Tom and Kate Baker as they attempted to keep control of their 12 children after moving to a new town.
The comedy, starring Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt as the parents, was a remake of the 1950 film of the same name, which was itself based on the semi-autobiographical book by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. But while fans will no doubt remember the chaos caused by the huge Baker family, more than two decades have now passed since the film hit cinemas – and its young stars have all grown up.
Here’s what happened to the 12 Baker children:
Piper Perabo – Nora Baker
Piper Perabo played eldest daughter Nora, who was dealing with teenage romance and her dad’s overprotective behaviour.
The actress was already known for Coyote Ugly before landing the role and went on to star in Covert Affairs, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination, as well as Billions, Angel Has Fallen and Yellowstone.
Away from acting, Piper has become increasingly involved in activism and humanitarian causes, including working with the International Rescue Committee.
She married actor and director Stephen Kay in 2014, with the pair keeping much of their relationship away from the spotlight.
Tom Welling – Charlie Baker
Tom Welling played Charlie, the eldest Baker son, but it wasn’t long before he landed the role that would define his career.
He played Clark Kent in Smallville for a decade, before later appearing in Lucifer and reprising his Superman role in the Arrowverse series Batwoman.
His personal life has also changed considerably since his Cheaper by the Dozen days.
After his first marriage to Jamie White ended in divorce, Welling married Jessica Rose Lee in 2019.
The couple have two sons, Thomson and Rocklin.
Hilary Duff – Lorraine Baker
Hilary Duff was already a huge star when she played Lorraine, thanks to Lizzie McGuire.
She went on to release several albums and star in shows including Gossip Girl, Younger and How I Met Your Father.
Duff has also built a busy family life. She has four children – son Luca from her previous marriage to Mike Comrie, and daughters Banks, Mae and Townes with husband Matthew Koma. Duff and Koma married in 2019 and have continued to share glimpses of their family life with fans.
She has also returned to the stage and is currently taking her music around the world on her first global tour in almost two decades, with her Lucky Me Tour running through 2026 and into 2027.
Kevin Schmidt – Henry Baker
Kevin Schmidt played Henry, the clarinet-playing Baker child.
He continued acting after the movie, appearing in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Unnatural History and The Young and the Restless. He later became involved in business and co-founded Hapbee.
Schmidt has also kept some of his personal life private, although he revealed in 2021 he had proposed to his girlfriend at Niagara Falls.
Alyson Stoner – Sarah Baker
Alyson Stoner played Sarah, the daughter behind some of the family’s most memorable schemes.
They went on to become a Disney favourite, starring alongside Demi Lovato in Camp Rock and appearing in the Step Up franchise.
Stoner has since worked as a dancer, choreographer, actor and wellness entrepreneur, while also becoming increasingly open about their personal experiences and wellbeing.
Jacob Smith – Jake Baker
Jacob Smith played Jake, the sixth Baker child.
Unlike some of his co-stars, Smith eventually stepped away from Hollywood.
He appeared in films and TV shows including Troy, Miracles and Without a Trace, but his last credited acting role came in 2006.
He has largely stayed out of the public eye since leaving acting.
Forrest Landis – Mark Baker
Forrest Landis played Mark, the shy Baker child who famously ran away from home.
He continued acting in films including Flightplan and The Skeleton Key before stepping away from the industry.
Landis has largely kept his personal life private since leaving Hollywood, although he has maintained an interest in skateboarding.
Liliana Mumy – Jessica Baker
Liliana Mumy played one of the Baker twins, Jessica.
She continued acting, particularly in voice roles, lending her voice to shows including The Loud House and Sofia the First.
Mumy announced her engagement in 2021 and has continued working in entertainment while also becoming a fitness instructor.
Morgan York – Kim Baker
Morgan York played Jessica’s twin sister Kim.
She later appeared in The Pacifier and Hannah Montana before deciding to leave acting behind.
York has since pursued her love of writing, becoming a fantasy novelist and podcaster.
She previously explained that acting simply wasn’t enjoyable for her anymore and that she preferred writing fiction.
Blake Woodruff – Mike Baker
Blake Woodruff played Mike, the Baker family’s tenth child.
He continued acting after the film, appearing in The Young and the Restless, Whisper and Victor Crowley.
However, he has largely stepped away from the spotlight and pursued a career outside acting.
Brent and Shane Kinsman – Nigel and Kyle Baker
Real-life twins Brent and Shane Kinsman played the youngest Baker children, Nigel and Kyle.
The brothers returned for the 2005 sequel and also appeared as the Scavo twins on Desperate Housewives. However, they eventually left acting behind.
The twins went on to attend California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, choosing a life away from Hollywood.
The pair have also developed a shared passion for Brazilian jiu-jitsu and have continued to appear in competitions together.
