Chelsea piled further pressure on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge, as Lisandro Martinez was sent off during a disastrous second half for the visitors.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring five minutes after the restart before Cole Palmer converted a penalty following Martinez’s dismissal for a second bookable offence.
The result extended United’s winless run to nine matches in all competitions, their worst sequence since the 1988-89 season, while Chelsea capitalised on their opponents’ mistakes to secure all three points.
United waste chances in entertaining first half
Chelsea made a positive start, with Estevao looking lively on his first Premier League start of the season.
The Brazilian thought he had opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he converted the rebound after Senne Lammens saved Pedro Neto’s effort, but the offside flag ruled out his goal.
United responded with a series of promising attacks and should have taken the lead four minutes later.
Bryan Mbeumo released Bruno Fernandes through on goal, but the United captain blazed his left-footed effort over the crossbar with only Mike Penders to beat.
Fernandes then flashed a dangerous ball across the six-yard box, although Mbeumo could not quite make contact.

Amad Diallo was another bright spark for the visitors, forcing Penders into a save from distance before dispossessing Wesley Fofana and racing into the penalty area, only to be denied by the Chelsea goalkeeper.
United thought they had finally broken the deadlock in the 34th minute when Matheus Cunha turned home Harry Maguire’s header following a Fernandes corner.
However, a VAR review showed Cunha had strayed narrowly offside and the goal was disallowed.
Chelsea almost punished United shortly afterwards when Palmer’s corner was headed back across goal by Fofana, with the ball deflecting off Moises Caicedo and striking the post.
Amad then wasted arguably the best chance of the half after capitalising on another Fofana mistake, lifting his finish over the crossbar when clean through.
Neto also went close at the other end, firing narrowly wide from a tight angle as the teams entered half-time level.
Rogers breaks deadlock before Martinez sees red
Chelsea needed just five minutes of the second half to take the lead through a brilliant individual effort from Rogers.
United surrendered possession inside their own half, allowing Romeo Lavia to find the England international.
Rogers drove directly at the visiting defence, skipped past two challenges and calmly lifted the ball over the advancing Lammens to make it 1-0.
United attempted to respond, but their hopes suffered a major setback when Martinez collected two yellow cards in the space of four minutes.
The Argentine was initially booked in the 59th minute for repeatedly pulling back Rogers during a dangerous Chelsea attack.
Moments later, he challenged Fofana inside the penalty area as Palmer delivered a corner, with the Chelsea defender going to ground.
Referee Peter Bankes initially allowed play to continue, but was sent to the pitchside monitor following a VAR intervention.
After reviewing the incident, Bankes awarded Chelsea a penalty and showed Martinez a second yellow card, reducing United to 10 men.
Palmer stepped up in the 64th minute and squeezed his penalty past Lammens, who guessed correctly and got a hand to the ball but could not prevent it from finding the bottom corner.

The goal was Palmer’s 50th in the Premier League for Chelsea, reaching the milestone in just 105 appearances.
Carrick responded by introducing Mason Mount and Ayden Heaven, but the visitors struggled to create opportunities with their numerical disadvantage.
Estevao thought he had added a third in the 72nd minute after collecting Palmer’s pass and firing into the roof of the net, only for VAR to rule him narrowly offside.
The Brazilian continued to cause problems and forced another excellent save from Lammens late on.
United almost pulled a goal back in stoppage time when Mbeumo connected with a stunning volley from the edge of the area, but Penders produced a superb fingertip save to divert the ball onto the crossbar.
Palmer then missed a clear opportunity to make it 3-0, while substitute Valentin Barco failed to connect with Malo Gusto’s cross at the far post.
