Preview for Chelsea v Tottenham

Tottenham have finally got off the mark. Now Roberto De Zerbi faces the small matter of a trip to Stamford Bridge, where Spurs have had very little joy in recent years.

Monday’s 3-1 win over Coventry was a huge relief. It was Tottenham’s first Premier League victory of the season, and it lifted them to 15th. It was also a striking performance, as Spurs scored three times from outside the box for the first time in a league game since September 2022.

Tottenham are still well below where they expected to be after spending big over the summer, though.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are building momentum. Xabi Alonso’s side beat Everton 2-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last weekend, with Pedro Neto scoring in each half, and that made it back-to-back league wins after the 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth. They are now fourth.

Chelsea’s attack is their biggest strength. They have scored 17 Premier League goals, one of the best tallies in the division, although they have still been conceding more than Alonso would like.

The Bridge has been a fortress in London derbies. Chelsea have lost just one of their last 16 Premier League derbies at home, and they have won six straight league games against Spurs, most recently in May.

The Premier League Table

  • Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Promotion – Champions League (League phase)
  • Position 5 : Promotion – Europa League (League phase)
  • Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation – Championship

Team News for Chelsea v Tottenham

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez sustained a nasty injury at Everton, so Mike Penders is expected to make a rare start. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers are likely to support João Pedro in attack once again.

Tottenham, as is seemingly always the way, have problems. Savio and Lucas Bergvall both have muscle injuries and are expected to be out for a few weeks, while Destiny Udogie missed the Coventry game with a minor knee problem.

There was better news on Omar Marmoush, Andy Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo, who all came off in the second half on Monday. De Zerbi said none of the three are injured, with Marmoush suffering from cramp.

Rodrigo Bentancur serves the second game of his three-match ban. Dejan Kulusevski made his first appearance in more than 500 days against Coventry and could feature from the bench again.

Pedro Porro has a slim chance of returning at right-back. If he isn’t fit, De Zerbi is likely to stick with a back three.

Expected line-ups for Chelsea v Tottenham

Chelsea: Penders; Acheampong, Lacroix, Colwill; Neto, Caicedo, Henderson, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer; Joao Pedro

Tottenham: Kinsky; Adarabioyo, Van Hecke, Van de Ven; Kudus, Robertson, Tonali, Maddison, Gray; Marmoush, Solanke

Prediction for Chelsea v Tottenham

Spurs will be buoyed by claiming their first win over Coventry on Monday night but Chelsea are a step up in class. The home side have more match winners and should edge what should be a good game.
