Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Wednesday organised the ‘Women’s Safety and Gender Justice Conference 2026’, bringing together women’s rights activists, students, transgenders, social workers, and representatives from organised and unorganised sectors to discuss issues of safety, equality, and gender justice.
The conference was organised by the GCC’s Gender & Policy Lab (GPL) in association with the Women’s Safety and Gender Justice Collective at the Amma Maaligai conference hall on the Ripon Buildings campus. Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu delivered the special address.
GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, Joint Commissioner (Education) K. Karpagam, adviser to the Women’s Safety and Gender Justice Collective Prof. Saraswathi, Geetha and other members of the collective, an inspector from the Singappen special police force and GPL team leader Legis were among those who
participated.
The conference held five thematic sessions focusing on the safety of female students in educational institutions and violence against children, women’s safety from the perspective of women’s organisations, safety, rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities and transgender persons, and safety of women working in the organised and unorganised sectors.
Themed “Women’s Safety, Gender Justice and Gender-Responsive Policy,” the conference sought to facilitate structured discussions and participation from different stakeholders on women’s safety, gender justice, equality, rights and gender-responsive policymaking.
