Chennai: The Dr U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Library, Chennai, presented the Mahavidwan Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai Award and the Dr U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Award to eminent Tamil scholar V. Padhumanar and historian A.R. Venkatachalapathy, at a function held at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai, on Tuesday.
Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar, who was the chief guest, presented the awards, citations and cash prizes in the presence of Dr. G. Viswanathan, Chairman, Dr U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Library and Founder & Chancellor, VIT, and Dr. G.V. Selvam, Vice President, VIT. Tamil scholar Mr. V. Padhumanar was honoured with the Mahavidwan Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai Award for his contribution to Tamil language, while Mr. A.R. Venkatachalapathy received the Dr. U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Award in recognition of his contribution to Tamil history and research.
Speaker Prabhakar also released a book on Nannool, with Dr. G.V. Selvam receiving the first copy. Speaking on the occasion, J.C.D. Prabhakar said that the time had come for a renaissance of the Tamil language and noted that the Tamil Nadu government had been taking steps towards its development.
