
Raipur: Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Thursday moved a resolution in the House seeking 33 percent reservation for women in the parliament and state Assemblies after completion of delimitation process.
A one-day special session of the state Assembly was convened on Thursday to discuss the issue of women empowerment and reservation for them in the legislative bodies in the wake of the defeat of the women’s quota bill in the Lok Sabha recently.
A marathon debate on the issue was going on in the House till the last reports came.
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Charan Das Mahant sought to move a private resolution seeking immediate implementation of 33 percent reservation for women, as per the bill passed in the parliament in 2023.
Speaker Dr Raman Singh however rejected his plea to place the private resolution.
Several treasury bench members, while participating in the debate, demanded a 33 percent quota for women in the parliament and state Assemblies after completion of the delimitation process, while the Opposition Congress members sought implementation of one third quota for women in the legislative bodies after the ongoing census.
The debate witnessed heated exchanges between the treasury and Opposition benches.
Deputy chief minister Arun Sao hit out at the Congress saying that the grand old party was never interested to empower women and took a potshot at the party for not being able to implement its promise of providing an incentive of Rs 500 per month each to the women when Congress was in the power in Chhattisgarh in 2018-2023.
Participating in the debate, Congress MLA Anil Bhedia called the women’s quota issue raised by the BJP as ‘election stunt’ and questioned why the Centre has not implemented the Women Reservation Act passed in the parliament in 2023, so far.
