RAVENNA − Scoring against Chippewa is just not an option for opposing teams these days.

It’s been that way for awhile actually. When Chippewa were Division V state runners-up in 2024, the Chipps conceded just 10 goals in their 23-match season. Last season as Division V state finalists again, the Chipps conceded a school-record low seven goals in 24 matches.

Going into Saturday night’s OHSAA Division V regional final match against familiar postseason foe Kirtland at Portage Community Bank Stadium in Ravenna, the Chipps had surrendered only five goals on the season. Chippewa would go onto to do what they’ve done all season and blank another opponent, as the Chipps (19-0-1) shutout Kirtland (17-5-1) 3-0 for their third straight Division V regional title and another state Final Four appearance.

It was Chippewa’s 18th clean sheet of 2026.

“I think our defense did a real good job tonight,” said Chippewa senior midfielder Lilly Davis. “Everybody stayed on their man and did exactly what the gameplan was. We kept it away from the girls we needed to.”

Just like most teams, Kirtland didn’t have much luck trying to penetrate Chippewa’s backline and midfield. When the Hornets did get the ball into the Chipps defensive third − mostly in transition opportunities − Chippewa was well-positioned to sweep up any kind of a threat.

Whether it was centerback Myra Lewis sending a clearance deep to start an attack, Leina Tester getting to a ball first before a Kirtland player, Paityn Welty running down an attacking player with the ball, Maryn West closing down space before she got injured early in the second half or Lea Ferrell’s defensive activity in the midfield, Chippewa crowded Kirtland the whole way.

“We had to make some adjustments when Maryn got hurt,” said Chippewa head coach Ruth Coney. “It was a physical game. They are a very physical team, which helps us prepare for the next game. We played with determination. We really wanted to return to state this year.”

Both teams held steady defensively for most of the first half until Chippewa broke the match open at the 16-minute mark, when Davis cleared the ball (what could also be viewed as pass) from the midfield to the left side of the field right to Chippewa’s most dangerous player on the pitch in forward Delaney Marshall, who slid it past the goalkeeper with her left foot for the Chipps first goal.

“I was just trying to kick it as far as I can and hope somebody would get it,” Davis said of her assist. “It was exciting to see it go in. I wasn’t expecting it to go in.”

Davis had her hand in Chippewa’s second goal in the second half, as she made a throw in that took a couple of bounces into the box and landed at Marshall’s feet where she smashed it in with her left foot to give the Chipps a 2-0 lead with 17 minutes to go. Marshall completed the hat trick with her third goal about 10 minutes later.

“My teammates know I can throw the ball pretty far,” Davis added. “I was just trying to throw it as far as I can in the box and hope someone gets a foot on it and Delaney did today.”

With the win, Chippewa will meet Berlin Hiland in the state semifinals on Tuesday − who they defeated 5-0 in September − and a chance to play in the school’s third consecutive Division V state title game.

“I’m so excited for the girls. They’ve worked so hard and they’re a team that deserves to play in state again,” Coney said.

Said Davis, “This will be our third time going back. It’s really exciting to be playing Tuesday. That’s what we want. To be playing another week. All the seniors want to do it for each other.”
