In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Chris Johnson’s wife, Brittany, got candid about her life after becoming his primary caregiver. Back in May 2025, Chris and Brittany’s lives completely changed when the former was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 39. Brittany shared that no one other than her would have been a better caregiver for Chris. She mentioned that her life changed completely after becoming Chris’ full-time caregiver.
The former NFL player requires extensive care, with help from Brittany, family members, and their four children. Chris requires breathing support with the use of a CPAP machine, and he has to be fed and changed by Brittany. She shared:
“It’s nonstop, but I wouldn’t rather it be anyone else taking care of Chris. I truly believe that this was my calling.”
During a PEOPLE photoshoot, Chris Johnson used his speech device to call out “leg,” and his twin sons, CJ and Kaden, helped him stretch his legs. Using his speech device, the former NFL star shared that ALS has taken away his independence. As a father, his first instinct was to protect his kids. However, he is unable to do that. The former NFL running back added that the hardest part of having ALS is that his mind still works normally, but his body is gradually losing its ability to function.
Chris and Brittany have been together since 2016. In the same interview, Brittany shared that Chris’ ALS diagnosis not only changed their lives but also their kids’ lives. She mentioned that no kid should go through these kinds of situations. Brittany highlighted that while their kids do have their dad, he is absent physically. She added that the former NFL star was a hands-on dad and used to take them out for exercise. But now, things have changed due to his ALS diagnosis.
Earlier, in June 2025, Chris appeared on the show Good Morning America. During the conversation, the former NFL star expressed his grief about not being able to pick up his 7-year-old daughter. He mentioned that just one year ago, he picked up his daughter so that she could make a wish while blowing out candles on her birthday cake. He added that while people assume that he is not the same person, he still dreams and loves his family. However, his body does not cooperate.
Further, in the interview, Brittany stated that sometimes she and her family feel like prisoners in their home, as it is hard for them to go out. She highlighted that they try to enjoy the little moments. She shared:
“Sometimes we feel like we’re prisoners in our home because it just takes so much just to get out of the house, but we try to get out. It is nonstop trying to make sure all of Chris’ needs are met and that he’s comfortable. It’s tough.”
