Christa Pike has been making headlines for some time now. She has spent more than three decades inside the prison for murdering 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in 1995. At the time, Christa was 18. According to Pike, Colleen reportedly insulted her and tried to steal her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp.
Christa was scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026, at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. However, her execution went wrong after she was administered two doses of pentobarbital. After her failed execution, Christa was moved to an undisclosed hospital in critical condition. Now, her lawyer shared that she may not fully recover.

According to reports, Christa Pike was admitted to a hospital in the Nashville area on the night of September 30, 2026. Now, Christa Pike’s attorney Stephen Ferrell revealed that she is still “critically ill.” Speaking to Jake Tapper on CNN, Ferrell shared that Christa is still hospitalized and remains on a ventilator. He mentioned that Christa’s hospital room is under security, and he is unable to meet her. Ferrell said:
“She is guarded. I’m not sure who may have seen her. I know I have not seen her. The state of Tennessee has not yet said whether it will ultimately try to execute her again.”
Ferrell added that he believes that Christa may not fully recover after the failed execution. He mentioned that the doctors who are treating Pike at the moment still don’t know how she will be affected in the long run. There were reports claiming that Christa was brain-dead. However, it was just a rumor, as Pike is alive and is still in critical condition. Ferrell said:
“I think one of the main things that will leave this up in the air for a while is the fact that we don’t know what the prognosis is, as in the long-term prognosis.”

Christa Pike grew up in Beckley, in southern West Virginia, and her parents, Carissa Hansen and Glenn Pike, were alcoholics who neglected her. At the age of 18, Pike went to the Knoxville Job Corps, hoping it would give her a fresh start. She allegedly wanted to become a nurse. However, destiny had other plans. Pike committed the crime when she was 18. Tennessee sentenced Pike to death on March 30, 1996.
According to reports, Christa lured 19-year-old Slemmer to a park by telling her they wanted to visit a music store and collect marijuana they had hidden there. Pike and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl, murdered Colleen with a box cutter on January 12, 1995. After Slemmer was dead, a pentagram was carved into her chest, and a piece of her skull was removed. In a recent interview, former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith revealed that Colleen was tortured for almost an hour before she was killed.
Keith shared that Christa, along with Tadaryl, beat, cut, and stopped Slemmer from screaming. When Slemmer tried to escape, they held her down. Later, when she begged for her life, they slashed her with blades. Pike kept a fragment of Slemmer’s skull as a trophy and showed it off to her classmates before her arrest.
In a recent interview with the BBC, interviewer Helen Roberts opened up about Christa’s confession about the crime. For those unaware, 20 years ago, Helen interviewed then 30-year-old Christa inside the prison. At the time, Pike had already served 11 years on death row. Pike admitted that the night she killed Colleen, she had lost her mind. She added that someone had taken over her and she did not realize what she was doing.
