Christa Pike’s name has been in the headlines ever since it was revealed that she was set to be executed on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, by lethal injection. For those unaware, she became the youngest woman in the United States to receive a death sentence at the age of 18 for the cold-blooded killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Christa Pike was set to die by lethal injection at 11 am ET on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. It was Tennessee’s first execution of a woman in 200 years. The state government and Supreme Court had earlier refused requests for clemency in Christa Pike’s case. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said in a statement:
“After deliberate consideration of Christa Gail Pike’s request for clemency and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and do not plan to intervene.”
However, just an hour before Christa Pike’s execution was scheduled to be carried out, it was halted. Speaking about the last-minute decision, the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit said that it needed to review claims made by Christa’s attorneys to stop her execution.
For those unaware, Christa Pike had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Her attorneys had asked officials to reconsider the death sentence, citing her young age at the time of the crime, her childhood abuse, her mental health, and the circumstances surrounding her original trial.
According to her legal team, Christa Pike had experienced severe sexual abuse, violence, and neglect throughout her childhood. In addition to this, they also pointed to the changes in scientific understanding of adolescent brain development over the past three decades.
With worldwide attention on the case, many international human rights experts and organizations, including Amnesty International, also urged Tennessee to halt Christa Pike’s execution. Taking these things into consideration, the court now said:
“The interests of justice and the finality of Pike’s impending execution compel the entry of a short stay of execution in order to properly analyze the parties’ fully briefed arguments and resolve the issues on the merits.”
As of now, it is unclear exactly how long Christa Pike’s execution will be halted. Her attorney, Stephan Farrell of the Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, said, “The court has stayed this, recognizing the serious concerns about Christa’s scheduled execution.”
Christa Pike had initially said that she’s at peace and “not afraid to die.” Instead, in a handwritten letter, she wrote that she was “only nervous about the process.” The 51-year-old also thanked everyone who had supported her in the days leading up to her execution date. She claimed that the support had humbled her beyond words. Christa added:
“I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who has supported me through these hard days. I’ve felt more love in the last two weeks than I have my entire life. Though there was an absence — when my people showed up for me — They have showed up and showed out! I am humbled beyond words.”

Christa Pike was 18 years old when she lured the victim, Colleen Slemmer, to the University of Tennessee Agricultural campus on the night of January 12, 1995. Her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, 17, had also helped her, as they pretended they were going to the campus to smoke marijuana. The trio was joined by fellow Job Corps Center student, Shadolla Peterson.
When all four of them reached the campus, Christa turned on Slemmer and began assaulting her. The assault continued for 30 minutes to an hour, even though Slemmer tried repeatedly to run away. Eventually, Slemmer died at the scene, and her body was found the next morning. A few days after the murder, Christa Pike admitted to the police that she was behind the crime. Her boyfriend, Tadaryl, also confessed that he had helped in the attack.
