Christa Pike's Lawyer Appeals For Mercy After Failed Execution, 'Has Been A Serious Punishment...'

Christa Pike is still in critical condition. She was admitted to the hospital on the night of September 30, 2026, following her botched execution. According to reports, Christa, who has spent more than three decades behind bars for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, survived two doses of pentobarbital. Now, days after her failed execution, Christa Pike’s attorney wants her death sentence to be changed to a lesser sentence, as he believes the attempted execution was already a severe punishment.

Christa Pike’s lawyer is calling for her death-row sentence to be commuted

In a recent interview with CNN, Christa Pike’s lawyer, Stephen Ferrell, said that the ‘tortuous’ botched execution is punishment enough even for her ‘awful crime’. He called for her death-row sentence to be commuted. He appealed for mercy to Tennessee Governor Bill Lee after the failed execution and requested that Pike be spared from future execution attempts, even if she recovers from being critically ill. He said:

“This has been a serious punishment for a very serious and awful crime.”

According to the latest reports, Christa Pike is still hospitalized and remains on a ventilator. In the same interview, Stephen revealed that Pike is still “critically ill.” He shared that Christa’s hospital room is under security, and he is unable to meet her. He added that Tennessee has not yet said whether it will ultimately try to execute her again.

Further, in the interview, Ferrell shared that he believes that Christa may not fully recover after the failed execution. He mentioned that the doctors who are treating Pike at the moment still don’t know how she will be affected in the long run.

In a recent interview with Nexstar’s WKRN, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, Robin Maher, discussed about the death penalty protocol of Tennessee. According to Tennessee’s death penalty protocol, a second dose of pentobarbital can be administered only if the first dose doesn’t result in death.

Robin clarified that the protocol doesn’t tell the state what to do if a second dose doesn’t work. Maher explained that when the second dose of pentobarbital failed to act, the prison staff did not know what to do next. They became confused as the execution went wrong. As Christa was still alive but critically ill, staff arranged for emergency services.

After Pike survived the two lethal-injection drugs, Tennessee officials had to change their plan. They were originally trying to carry out her death sentence, but when Pike survived and became seriously ill, they had to call emergency medical help and take her to the hospital.

Robin said Tennessee did not really have another option except sending Pike to the hospital. Further, in the interview, Maher explained that although Tennessee has the legal authority to carry out a death sentence, they still hold a responsibility to protect prisoners from cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

More about 1995 Colleen Slemmer murder case

According to reports, Christa Pike lured 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer to a park by telling her they wanted to visit a music store and collect marijuana they had hidden there. At the time, Pike was 18. Christa and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl, who was 17 back then, murdered Slemmer with a box cutter on January 12, 1995. After Colleen was dead, a pentagram was carved into her chest, and a piece of her skull was removed.

In an interview, former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith revealed that Colleen was tortured for almost an hour before she was murdered by Pike and Tadaryl. Christa confessed in an old interview with Helen Roberts that Colleen reportedly insulted her and tried to steal her boyfriend. Keith mentioned that when Slemmer tried to escape, Pike and her then-boyfriend held her down and also stopped her from screaming.
