As Christian Horner lifts the lid on his marriage to Geri Halliwell in his new memoir, he reveals how she stood by him during the storm that destabilised his career

Behind the Formula One paddock’s fierce rivalries, championship celebrations and relentless scrutiny, Christian Horner has always had another world to return to – his family life with wife Geri Halliwell.

But in recent years, that private world has been thrust into the spotlight, with allegations against the former Red Bull boss, the release of purported messages and his eventual departure from the team he led for two decades.

Now, in his new memoir, Drive: A Memoir, Christian has offered a glimpse into the conversations that took place away from the cameras, describing how the former Spice Girl supported him when his professional and personal lives were under intense scrutiny.

Christian’s troubles began in February 2024, when a female Red Bull employee accused him of inappropriate behaviour. He denied the allegations, and an independent investigation commissioned by the team cleared him.

The situation escalated when an anonymous email containing purported WhatsApp messages and photographs was circulated to figures within Formula One and the media.

The messages, which were alleged to have passed between Christian and a female colleague, placed his marriage firmly under the spotlight.

A second investigation, following an appeal, upheld the original findings. Christian was cleared on both occasions, although the controversy never strayed far away.

In his memoir, he describes the moment he learned of the allegations, recalling how a conversation with his lawyer left him struggling to comprehend what was happening.

He then had to explain the situation to Geri, who was at home getting the family ready for the school day.

“‘This can’t be right,’ I said, eventually, wanting to ask more questions but not knowing where to begin,” he wrote. “What was going on? The lawyer, presumably aware that a wrecking ball was being aimed at my life, explained the situation as my sense of bewilderment rose.”

He went on: “In the kitchen, Geri was getting the family ready for school. When everyone had been packed off for the day, I walked downstairs and broke the news.”

According to Christian’s account in the book, she immediately brought calm to the situation. “Geri knew by my face that something was very wrong. ‘What’s up?’ She frowned as I repeated what the lawyer had said. She fell silent as she listened. We both understood the implications immediately. She looked at me. ‘Just tell your truth,’ she said. ‘That’s all I can do,’ I replied.”

The couple put on a united display in March 2024, when Geri travelled to Bahrain during the opening race weekend of the Formula One season, just days after the ‘leak’. Dressed in her trademark white, Geri arrived to stand alongside her husband, and the pair walked hand in hand through the paddock as photographers and reporters watched.

In an interview with The Independent published in October, Christian described his wife as “phenomenal”, praising the strength she showed during the controversy.

“Our lives had been turned upside down, yet she found the strength and conviction to support me through an immensely difficult period, one that was undoubtedly challenging for her as well,” he writes. “Her belief in me gave me the determination to move forward. At a time when my confidence was being tested, Geri provided the perspective and stability that I needed most. Without her support, I’m not sure I could have navigated those months in the same way.”

Geri first met her now-husband back in 2009 when she was introduced by F1 tycoon Bernie Eccleston. However, it wasn’t meant to be at the time as Christian was married to his first wife Beverley Allen and they were hoping have their first child together. But just five years later, Christian and Geri got together just six months after Beverley had their little girl, Olivia.

Christian’s parents Garry and Sara were reported to be appalled and refused to go to the couple’s wedding in May 2015 at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire. They continued to support Beverley until she died in July 2025 at the age of 58 following a two-year battle with eye cancer.
