Christopher Nolan And Emma Thomas Love Story, UCL Partners Who Built Syncopy Inc And A Family Of Six

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is scheduled to arrive on July 17, 2026. With an ensemble cast, the upcoming fantasy action film centers on the Greek king Odysseus, who aims to return to his wife Penelope after the Trojan War. In a recent interview with CBS News on May 17, 2026 (ET), the director addressed the fact that he was working to bring an extreme version of the storyline.

Christopher said in the latest conversation that he visualises a film as an audience and attempts to take the audience when he starts directing the movie. Nolan stated that he is taking the same path in The Odyssey. For the unversed, The Odyssey is Nolan’s 13th film as a director. Christopher’s journey as a filmmaker started years ago, and he had once collaborated with his wife, Emma Thomas, in a short film, released at the time when they were in college. Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas have maintained privacy about everything related to their relationship over the years. However, they tied the knot in 1997. Three years later, the pair became the parents of a child named Flora, in 2001. The duo had their second child, Oliver, in 2003. The couple had two more children by 2008, Rory and Magnus. Although Christopher’s family has been out of the spotlight for all this time, his children have been featured in his films. 

Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas first met at a college

Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan’s relationship dates back to 1989 at the University College London. This is the place where the duo met each other when they moved in together to the dorm hall. In 1993, the pair graduated in English literature. Christopher later received his honorary doctorate in 2017. Notably, he had served as the president of the institute’s film society. While accepting his doctorate, Christopher addressed the students by saying:

“The attitude that permeates UCL when you study here is something that you carry forward. This attitude of not accepting things as they are, not accepting the status quo, but looking to improve things, looking for a better way, looking to advance things in all fields.”

When they first met at the University College London, Emma Thomas was a student of ancient history. However, she decided to enter the world of movies after being introduced to Christopher Nolan and a film club at UCL. Emma eventually began working with Nolan in some short films. Notably, Christopher used to bring snacks for the crew members working on the short films. Back in 2018, Emma Thomas told Vanity Fair that when she first joined Nolan for his short films, she began producing them without being aware of what she was doing.

The pair also used to organise classic movie screenings at the university and sell tickets for them. The duo earned some money from the sales and saved the same so that Nolan could make his first film, Following. It was a 16mm black-and-white film. The film premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in 1999. While Following was the beginning of Christopher Nolan’s career as a filmmaker, he and Emma had previously made another short film in college, which was a thriller and fantasy movie, titled Doodlebug.

Christopher Nolan wanted to pursue his career as a filmmaker before he joined college. He once said in an interview that this is one of the reasons why he came to the University College London. Nolan mentioned that he liked to study English, and everything that he knew about literature is something that he used for writing and screenwriting. In 2010, Emma Thomas told Collider about how Christopher Nolan has been the same since the time he was in college. Emma said:

“Chris… we met when I was 18 and Chris was 19. And he had already known at that point for I think 10 years that he wanted to direct films. So he’s always been a very singular… he’s had a singular ambition.”

Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas also formed Syncopy Inc. in 2001. The name of the company was advised by the former’s father and is a play on the word, syncopate, as per PEOPLE. Apart from Nolan’s films, Syncopy has also produced Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, released in 2013.

Emma Thomas was the one who pitched the idea of Dunkirk to Christopher Nolan

Dunkirk has been another one of Christopher Nolan’s successful films over the years. Notably, the concept was brought to Nolan by Emma Thomas. According to Vanity Fair, Emma gave a copy of the book addressing the Dunkirk evacuation to her husband. This was because Christopher was not getting an idea for his next film. Emma purchased the book a long time ago when her entire family visited the Churchill War Rooms museum in London. Nolan later made a script and brought it to Warner Bros. Emma recalled the experience by saying:

“We knew we couldn’t guarantee that this is going to be a massive box-office success even though we were opening it in summer and trying to position it very much as an entertainment. So we asked for half the money that we’d had for Interstellar. We are not entirely reckless. We didn’t want to make a film that was going to wreck our careers if it didn’t work and if nobody went to see it.”
