After the success of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan is bringing The Odyssey to the theatres after a gap of more than three years. The fantasy action film has already left a positive impression on critics after its premiere on July 6, 2026. Now, the movie is being released for the general audience on July 17, 2026, and it is arriving in various premium large formats along with IMAX.
Christopher Nolan has once again brought an ensemble cast for the film, and the pre-sales have hinted that it will create bigger records this time. With only a few hours left for release, netizens have started looking at everything related to Homer’s Greek epic of the same name, from which the film has been adapted.
Homer’s The Odyssey focuses on the journey of Odysseus after the Trojan War
The epic was composed around the 8th century BCE in dactylic hexameter. The premise is set after the Trojan War, and it follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his 10-year attempt to return home.
The story starts years after the Trojan War has ended. Most Greek heroes have returned home, but Odysseus has not. He is being held on the island of Ogygia by the nymph Calypso. In Ithaca, Odysseus’ wife Penelope and son Telemachus are at home. Penelope is being pressured by many suitors who have moved into the palace. They eat Odysseus’ food and want Penelope to choose a new husband.
Telemachus, now grown, decides to look for news of his father. He travels to Pylos and Sparta and meets kings who fought at Troy. He learns Odysseus is alive but delayed. Meanwhile, the gods decide Odysseus should be allowed to leave Calypso. With help from Athena, he builds a raft and sails. He reaches the island of the Phaeacians. There, he tells them what happened to him after Troy.
He describes landing with his crew at the land of the Cicones, then at the island of the Lotus-Eaters. Next, they reach the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus. Odysseus blinds the Cyclops and escapes, but reveals his name. This makes the god Poseidon, Polyphemus’ father, his enemy. They visit Aeolus, who gives them winds in a bag. His crew opens it, and they are blown back.
They are then attacked by the Laestrygonians, who destroy most of the ships. Only Odysseus’ ship remains. They come to the island of Circe, who turns some of the crew members into pigs. With help from Hermes, Odysseus makes Circe change them back. Circe tells Odysseus to go to the Underworld. After entering the Underworld, Odysseus speaks to the prophet Tiresias and to the ghost of his mother.
On the way back, they pass the Sirens, whose song lures sailors. Odysseus has himself tied to the mast to hear it. They also pass Scylla and Charybdis, sea monsters. Later, his men kill and eat the cattle of the sun god Helios on Thrinacia. As punishment, Zeus destroys their ship. All die except Odysseus, who washes up on Calypso’s island. After seven years there, he is released.
He reaches Ithaca disguised as a beggar. With Athena’s help and Telemachus, he plans against the suitors. At a contest, he is the only one who can string his bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe heads. He then kills the suitors in the hall. He reveals himself to Penelope and restores order in Ithaca.
The Odyssey is supposed to create records with its opening figures
Considering that The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan’s next big film after Oppenheimer, the predictions for the box office collections are also becoming bigger at the same time. Early reports have stated that it might start at USD 90-100 million, marking a big debut for Nolan’s film after The Dark Knight Rises, released in 2012.
Furthermore, The Odyssey is expected to emerge as the third film of 2026 to get an opening of more than USD 100 million after Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The film will also not face competition from any other big film this week, and this is expected to help it take the first position on the domestic box office charts.
