
Kolkata: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police has taken over the probe into the death of Prabhas Mondal, a key accused of the Baruipur gangrape and murder case, in an encounter by cops in their custody in South 24 Parganas early Wednesday, days after his arrest.
The state detective agency was entrusted with the probe by the state government on Thursday since Baruipur district police is not entitled to conduct it as the encounter took place within its jurisdiction. The CID probe also comes amidst a judicial inquiry in the extra-judicial killing.
It will cover the sequence of events that led to the police encounter during the reconstruction of the crime. Meanwhile, the police have started searching for land to set up an outpost at Surjyapur, where the girl was gangraped and murdered, to strengthen security. Local residents earlier raised the demand also.
In another development, the cops arrested 22 more people till Thursday morning for their role in the mob fury in which an innocent youth was lynched on suspicion of being an accused of the crime on the 12-year-old girl, road and railway blockade happened and violent attacks unfolded on the police and nearby railway tracks.
With the fresh arrests, the total number of accused held in the three cases, which do not include the one of gangrape and murder, rose to 40 so far.
