Vijayawada: Vijayawada, Guntur and Mangalagiri-Tadepalli civic bodies earned state-level recognition for their sanitation and environmental initiatives at the Swachh Andhra Awards 2026, organised on Friday on the occasion of Swachh Diwas marking Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

The awards ceremony was held in Vijayawada, where Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu presented the honours. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) was named the ‘Swachh City’ at the state level. NTR district Collector and VMC Special Officer Dr G Lakshmisha and Commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra received the award. VMC also secured a state-level award under the Vayu Sarvekshan–Swachh Vayu category for cities with a population of three lakh and above.

Dhyanachandra said the twin awards recognised the corporation’s sustained efforts to keep Vijayawada clean, green and pollution-free. He stressed that public participation was crucial and credited sanitation workers, officials, staff, residents, NGOs, voluntary organisations and the media for the achievement.

Guntur Municipal Corporation bagged awards in three categories. Commissioner K. Mayur Ashok received the ‘Swachh Municipality’ award from the Chief Minister. Guntur secured second place in the category for cities with populations of three lakh and above. The corporation also received the Vayu Sarvekshan–Swachh Vayu award, while LIC Colony–Teja Welfare Association won the first prize in the Swachh Housing Colonies category.

The Guntur civic body attributed its success to 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection, segregation, vermicomposting, waste processing through MRF centres, dust control, greenery initiatives and strict enforcement against single-use plastic. The LIC Colony was recognised for waste segregation at source, composting, cleanliness of vacant plots and implementation of the reduce, reuse and recycle concept.

The Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation won a state-level award in the Swachh Municipalities category for cities with populations between one lakh and three lakh. Commissioner Shaik Aleem Basha and Assistant Commissioner P. Srinivasa Rao received the award and certificate.

The civic body was recognised for effective sanitation and waste management, cleanliness drives and public awareness programmes. Officials said the honour reflected the collective efforts of civic staff, sanitation workers and residents.
