HYDERABAD: As technology advances, cybercrimes are adopting new forms while traditional offences like thefts and burglaries in the city account for an annual property loss of around ₹30 crore. Citizens lose over ₹400 crore annually to cybercrimes alone, translating to an average loss of more than ₹1 crore per day to fraudsters, commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said this during Jagrukta Divas and an awareness seminar held for retired employees and senior citizens on Wednesday.
Sajjanar highlighted that senior citizens are frequently targeted through digital arrests, pension services and online banking frauds, and advised them never to trust fraudsters.
The city cybercrime division unveiled the ‘Suraksha Ka Tiranga’ poster aimed at creating awareness about cybercrimes. Sajjanar was joined by former undivided DGPs M. Ratan and Punam Malakondaiah, and retired ENC Kareem.
Sajjanar reiterated that no such concept as ‘digital arrest’ existed within Indian law or the police system. He warned against falling for online investment advertisements and trading links circulated on WhatsApp and Telegram, stressing that stock trading should be conducted only through SEBI‑approved brokers and authorised Demat accounts.
Recalling recent instances, he cautioned that retirement funds are being drained when children access smartphones to join online gaming or betting applications. He reiterated that banking details, PINs and OTPs should never be shared with anyone, including family members.
Victims must react immediately within the ‘Golden Hour’ by dialling 1930 or filing a complaint on the NCRP portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) to increase chances of freezing fraudsters’ accounts and recovering stolen funds.
