Mumbai: Several trains connecting Mumbai and other cities to Delhi have been rescheduled or cancelled ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) planned protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, prompting the party’s founder Abhijeet Dipke to accuse the Centre of being afraid of the youth.

Western Railway on Friday rescheduled the Mumbai Central-New Delhi Rajdhani Express (12951) and the Mumbai Central-Hazrat Nizamuddin August Kranti Rajdhani Express (12953) by five hours. It also cancelled the Bandra Terminus-Hazrat Nizamuddin Express (12247).

Other cancelled services include the Dr Ambedkar Nagar-New Delhi Express (20155), Indore-Hazrat Nizamuddin Express (09309), Indore-New Delhi Express (12415) and Sabarmati-New Delhi Express (12957).

The cancellations and rescheduling follow a Railway Board communication citing anticipated severe road traffic congestion around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations on October 10. Railway authorities have advised passengers to check updated train schedules before commencing their journeys.

Reacting to the disruption, Dipke on Friday criticised the Centre, saying it should shut down the entire country if it was afraid of the youth.

“Shut down the entire country if you are scared of the youth,” he told reporters in Mumbai, questioning the restrictions ahead of the demonstration.

The CJP has called for a massive protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The party has alleged voter-list tampering under the SIR exercise and accused the CEC of bypassing his two colleagues to alter Form 6, a key document for voter registration.

The Delhi Police have denied permission for the protest, citing the late submission of the application and violations during a previous demonstration. Police have also asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to shut 57 metro stations from Friday night until Saturday, citing concerns over possible unruly mob movement towards sensitive locations.

The restrictions on train services and proposed metro closures come amid heightened security arrangements in the national capital ahead of the planned demonstration.
