Hyderabad:The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) plans to construct three rainwater harvesting pits in every public park across its 76 wards to recharge groundwater and improve water conservation.

CMC commissioner G. Srijana said the corporation’s urban biodiversity (UBD) wing had been directed to prepare designs for the proposed pits. The initiative aims to utilise rainwater runoff and increase groundwater recharge instead of allowing rainwater to flow into drains.

She said the corporation was also coordinating with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to ensure the supply of treated water for maintaining parks and other green spaces.

The HMWSSB supplies nearly 1.5 lakh litres of treated water daily to the three municipal corporations. Of this, the CMC has been supplying nearly 90,000 litres through its own tankers, making around 200 trips daily to maintain parks, central medians and greenery beneath flyovers, she said.

The UBD wing has also been instructed to construct small water pumps in parks with borewell facilities to store water and prevent wastage.

Additionally, 337 small-capacity sewage treatment plants maintained by resident welfare associations are supplying treated water for non-potable purposes.

Srijana said builders in Cyberabad had been instructed to use treated water for construction activities instead of potable water. Warning of strict action against violations, she said, construction work could be stopped immediately, if builders failed to comply with the instructions.
