Coleen Rooney has complained about having her husband Wayne Rooney getting under her feet since the end of his football career – but he might just be jetting off to Australia soon
After his retirement from top-flight football, Wayne Rooney tried his luck as a manager at Derby County, Birmingham City, DC United and Plymouth Argyle before reinventing himself as a football pundit.
As a Match of the Day regular, Wayne was spending much more time at home in the £20million mansion near Knutsford in Cheshire that he shares with his wife Coleen. He may be spending more time out of the house if rumours of his involvement in I’m A Celebrity are to be believed.
She complained earlier this year that Wayne was getting under feet a lot more: “In some ways it’s good, in some ways it’s annoying, because we’ve never had that much time together,” she told The Times.
Coleen might be getting some much-needed peace soon though, with her husband being strongly-tipped to follow in her footsteps and sign up for I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.
According to insider leaks the 40-year-old former Manchester United and England striker is close to securing a historic deal with ITV. If it’s confirmed, it’s likely to be one of the programme’s biggest-ever signings. However, an ITV spokesperson has stressed that any predictions of casting at this stage remain speculation.
Behind-the-scenes sources say that Wayne is immensely competitive and keen to take on the Bushtucker Trials to impress his four sons. Coleen was runner-up on the ITV show in 2024, and Wayne would almost certainly be keen to improve on his wife’s performance.
Coleen’s I’m A Celebrity appearance hugely boosted her public profile in 2024. She was unexpectedly shot to fame back in 2002 when, still five days before his 17th birthday, her boyfriend scored a sensational last-minute winning goal against Arsenal – becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.

Rebekah was not the only person with access to her own social media accounts, and so it can never be determined exactly who was selling stories about Coleen’s’ personal life, but in July 2022, judge Mrs. Justice Steyn dismissed her claim, stating that Coleen’s accusation was “substantially true” and that Rebekah must have been aware of the leaks.

Coleen and Wayne have now signed up for a new fly-on-the-wall reality show, The Real Rooneys, which will premiere on Disney+ on Thursday (September 24).
