During his most recent appearance on The Late Show, Colin Farrell reflected on the period of his career when he was known as a much, much more wild figure than he is today. Back when he was filming Minority Report with Tom Cruise, it was also the Irish actor’s 31st birthday. And well, he really, really wanted to have the day off so he could delight in the earthly pleasures one could find at bars and night clubs. But to no one’s surprise, there wasn’t room on a high-budget, fast-paced production schedule to pause so he could celebrate a birthday.
“I had one of the worst days I’ve ever had on a film set,” Farrell admitted. “It was my birthday on May 31st, and we were shooting. I begged production — who did I think I was? — of a $120 million film if they’d not have me working on my birthday. So, of course, my pickup was 6 a.m. on May 31st, and I got up to all sorts of nonsense the night before. I remember getting into bed, and as soon as I turned off the light, the phone rang and it was the driver. (He) said, ‘It’s 10 past 6.’ And I went, ‘Oh, shit.’”
Naturally, when he pulled up to set, Farrell looked rode hard and put away wet. The assistant director stopped him and said there was no way he could start shooting like that. “I went, ‘Just get me six Pacifico cervezas and a packet of 20 Marlboro Red,’” Farrell explained. “Now, listen, it’s not cool because two years later I went to rehab, right? But it worked in the moment.”
Don’t Miss
To absolutely no one’s surprise, this wasn’t a full-proof method for success: Farrell remembered that it took him 46 takes to get one line right.
“I will never forget the line I had that I couldn’t get out. It was, ‘I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.’ That was the line that started the scene,” Farrell said.
To his defense, that’s quite the wordy line of dialogue. He was offered the chance to go outside and take a breath of fresh air. “I remember thinking, ‘If I go out and take a breath of fresh air, then I’ll be under more pressure when I come back in to be better.’ And I went, ‘No, we’ll just go through it,’” Farrell added. “We did 46 takes. Tom (Cruise) wasn’t very happy with me.”
Kind of worth the story now, though.
