50-year-old Christa Pike is currently dominating headlines after surviving two botched lethal injection attempts. She was scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026. She has spent more than three decades behind bars for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. On the other hand, Colleen Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, is trying hard to come to terms with the grave incident.
May, along with her husband, Raul Martinez, drove 11 hours from Florida to Tennessee so that they could attend Pike’s execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. In a recent interview, May recalled her last conversation with her daughter.
Colleen Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, spent 12 hours to witness Christa Pike’s failed execution
For 31 years, May Martinez has been waiting for justice and to see the person responsible for her daughter, Colleen Slemmer’s death, be punished. According to May, Christa Pike showed no signs of remorse. She shared that she wants her daughter’s killer to be dead. In an interview with PEOPLE, May said that Christa has never apologized to her for taking her daughter’s life, and she believes that Pike has never shown regret for killing Colleen, even after 31 years.
In the same interview, May revealed she spent 12 hours at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution waiting to see Christa Pike be executed for killing her daughter, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, in 1995. May and Raul arrived at 8:30 a.m. and did not leave the viewing room until 8 p.m., after the second failed attempt to administer a lethal injection to Pike. May said that they had been informed that the execution would occur at 10 a.m. that morning.
However, the execution got delayed because Pike’s lawyers asked judges to stop the execution temporarily. According to Raul, finally at quarter to 7, the Tennessee said, ‘It’s a go.’ May mentioned that she was going to hold a picture of Colleen at the execution, but she could not because the execution was so messed up. After the execution was botched, both May and Raul were moved to the commissioner’s office, where they waited for an hour to have a word with him.
According to Christa’s attorneys, Pike received two doses of pentobarbital, but had not lost consciousness. After the two failed attempts, Christa was shifted to an undisclosed hospital. Her attorneys told TMZ that she is critically ill and is still unconscious. As of the night of October 1, 2026, Pike was intubated and was on a ventilator.
May Martinez recalls her daughter, Colleen Slemmer’s final words
Further, in the interview, May Martinez recalled her daughter Colleen Slemmer’s final words to her. For those unaware, 19-year-old Colleen moved to Tennessee in 1994 to participate in a Job Corps program because of her interest in computer science. According to May, Colleen was an easy-going person and worked a lot with autistic and handicapped children.
On January 12, 1995, Pike and her then-boyfriend, 17-year-old Tadaryl Shipp, murdered Colleen with a box cutter. After Colleen was dead, a pentagram was carved into her chest, and a piece of her skull was removed. Shortly before she was murdered, 19-year-old Colleen spoke with her mother on the phone. However, due to a weak signal, May ended the call mid-conversation. Little did May know that it was her last conversation with her daughter. May said:
“She just said, ‘Mom, I don’t feel good, and they’re picking on me and everything else.’ So I said, ‘OK, and I can’t talk to you because I didn’t have good reception.’ I tried to call her back at 10:00 p.m., and she was already gone.”
May justice prevail in Colleen Slemmer’s case.
