A College of San Mateo football player was killed and two teammates were injured in a weekend car crash, the college said Monday.
Ja’Marion Grace, 19, of Fairfield, was identified as the student killed in the wreck, according to the community college. The football team said on its social media account that Grace was “not just a teammate – he was a brother.”

A GoFundMe organized by Dominique Suber said Grace, who went by “Pop,” was a son, grandson, brother and friend whose presence brought “love, laughter and warmth” to those around him.
“There are no words that can truly prepare a mother to bury her child. No mother should ever have to experience that kind of heartbreak,” the GoFundMe post says. “During this unimaginable time, Pop’s family, friends, and entire community are being asked to come together and support them as they navigate this devastating loss.”
CSM President Jennifer Taylor said two other student-athletes, who were not identified, were injured. One remains hospitalized with serious injuries while the other is recovering at home, Taylor said.
College officials did not say when or where the crash happened.

However, the California Highway Patrol reported a crash where a 19-year-old man from Fairfield was killed and another man seriously injured on Highway 101 at Yerba Buena Road in San Jose at about 2:06 a.m. on Sunday.
Authorities said the solo crash happened after the driver of a 2013 Ford Fusion lost control of the vehicle while driving northbound.
The 19-year-old killed was ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries, the CHP said. The 19-year-old driver from San Mateo was taken to a hospital with major injuries.
Grace was a freshman defensive back at CSM, which is 3-1 after a 45-16 win over Modesto Junior College in San Mateo on Saturday night.

Before joining the Bulldogs, Grace played football at Vanden High School in Fairfield. A photo captured at his June 2025 graduation by the Vacaville Reporter shows Grace, smiling and wearing sunglasses, a cap and gown, throwing up his hands in celebration after receiving his diploma.
Taylor said she met with members of the football program Monday morning and was “heartened by the immense care and togetherness” among the players, coaches and broader CSM community.
“Support from the college and from one another will be especially important in the days ahead,” she said.
As of Monday evening, the GoFundMe account had raised $15,691 toward the family’s goal of $28,000 for funeral expenses.
