How Snapchat helped ignite Lani Pallister’s career

Glasgow: It was Snapchat that unlocked an athlete who is now poised to become Australia’s greatest female distance swimmer.

Lani Pallister was relaxing in bed on a lazy Sunday in February, scrolling through her phone. It was about six months on from a deeply disappointing 2024 Paris Olympics. Pallister had contracted COVID-19, finished a distant sixth in the 800m freestyle and withdrawn from the 1500m freestyle.

Nine News can reveal the team of designers chosen to bring the Brisbane 2032 National Aquatic Centre to life, offering an exclusive first look at the locked-in plans for the major venue.

Catch up: The opening ceremony

Gigantic shimmering unicorns, a mythical Loch Ness monster, a dig at Victoria and the monarchs emerging from a Doctor Who Tardis.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow might have a reduced roster of sports, smaller stadiums and a shoestring budget, but the opening ceremony was certainly full of, as my mother would say, pizzazz.

The only reference to the fact that these Games were originally due to be staged in Victoria came after the two-hour mark, via a subtle, cheeky dig from Commonwealth Games Glasgow chair George Black.

Good evening

Good evening to everyone in Australia as we begin our Commonwealth Games coverage.

I’m Roy Ward and I’ll be leading the line for our live blog this evening into the early hours of tomorrow morning AEST as day one of the games plays out.

We have a crack team of reporters in Glasgow and my good self back here in Melbourne, where this event could and possibly should have been – but that is water under the bridge now.

Competition in the Lawn Bowls is already underway this morning in Glasgow and we will have some 3×3 basketball, swimming and gymnastics from around 7pm onwards.

Enjoy the hours to come.
