Manchester United’s miserable run continued as they were thrashed 4-1 by Como in the Champions League, with Nico Paz scoring twice in a superb performance for the Italian side.

Anastasios Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon were also on target for Cesc Fabregas’ team, who comfortably outplayed Michael Carrick’s men to secure a memorable result.

Joshua Zirkzee grabbed a late consolation for United, but it did little to disguise another worrying display from the Premier League side, who are now without a win in seven matches.

United actually created the first opening inside two minutes when Diogo Dalot raced onto Matheus Cunha’s pass, but the defender curled his effort wide.

Como immediately punished that miss, taking the lead with their first attack of the game.

Lucas Da Cunha found Paz on the edge of the penalty area, and the Argentine was given far too much time to turn before curling a brilliant left-footed effort beyond Senne Lammens into the bottom corner.

The hosts continued to threaten, with Douvikas looking dangerous whenever he received the ball inside the penalty area.

United had a rare opportunity when Harry Maguire headed over from Bryan Mbeumo’s delivery, but they offered little else going forward.

Como appealed for a penalty in the 19th minute when Martin Baturina went down under Maguire’s challenge, although the referee waved play on.

Douvikas then wasted a good opportunity in the 39th minute, firing a half-volley high and wide after racing onto Yan Couto’s through ball.

Baturina also tested Lammens with a powerful effort shortly before the interval, while Bruno Fernandes sent a curling shot over at the other end.

Paz inspires Como as United fall apart

Carrick responded by making two changes at the break, introducing Amad Diallo and Carlos Baleba for Cunha and Andrey Santos.

United initially showed more energy, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly damaged when Como doubled their advantage in the 49th minute.

Paz was once again heavily involved, finding space to slide a pass through for Douvikas, who escaped Matthijs de Ligt and swept a composed finish past Lammens.

The visitors struggled to respond, with Mason Mount sending an ambitious effort wide before Como threatened to add a third.

Da Cunha should have done better when he cut inside onto his left foot, but his curling effort failed to find the far corner.

Nico Paz

United’s problems worsened in the 57th minute when Baleba carelessly gave away possession in midfield.

Paz intercepted his attempted pass and raced towards goal before calmly slotting beyond the advancing Lammens to make it 3-0.

The Argentine almost completed his hat-trick two minutes later, but the United goalkeeper produced a good save to deny him from the edge of the area.

Carrick’s side enjoyed more possession as the second half progressed, although clear opportunities remained difficult to create.

Youri Tielemans sent a tame effort straight at Jean Butez, while Fernandes fired wildly over from distance.

Amad provided a rare bright moment when he struck a powerful effort from 25 yards, forcing Butez to tip the ball over the crossbar.

However, Como added a fourth in the 76th minute following another quick attack.

Substitute Kaiki delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where centre-back Ramon had made an unmarked run forward to power a header past Lammens.

Paz departed to a standing ovation shortly afterwards, having scored twice and assisted another in an outstanding individual display.

United finally found the net in stoppage time when Amad delivered a cross for Zirkzee, who controlled the ball before drilling a close-range finish past Butez.

It was little more than a consolation for the visitors, whose difficult Champions League campaign continued with another damaging result.
