Kadapa: Senior police officials in Rayalaseema have expressed serious concerns over what they describe as repeated lapses in policing across the districts in the region.
In the latest development in Almaspet area of Kadapa town, Two Town circle inspector (CI) Prasad Rao has been transferred following communal unrest.
This action comes close on the heels of several disciplinary measures taken against police personnel in recent weeks. About a month ago, DSP Venkateswarlu had reportedly been sent into voluntary retirement over alleged negligence in handling the high-profile murder of Dastagiri at Alankhanpalle.
The other case that drew public outrage is of traffic sub-inspector Hariprasad in Kurnool. He has been dismissed from service for allegedly cheating a woman under the pretext of a relationship.
Officials have been taking action against individuals after each incident. But criticism is mounting that preventive policing is lacking. “A pattern is emerging where action is taken only after incidents spiral out of control. The real challenge is to prevent such situations in the first place,” said a senior police officer from Kadapa district on condition of anonymity.
Tensions escalated three days ago in Kurnool after a youth named Balu allegedly committed suicide unable to bear harassment attributed to Three Town CI P. Seshaiah. The incident triggered protests between two political parties. The Tirupati Lok Sabha member has even written to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), seeking its intervention.
The honey-trap case in Anantapur district has created a statewide sensation. Rapthadu CI Sriharsha and two constables have been dismissed from service for allegedly siding with the accused, while Anantapur Three Town CI Rajendra Yadav has been asked to take voluntary retirement.
With allegations surfacing almost daily against circle inspectors across the police stations in Rayalaseema, senior officials are said to be under immense pressure. “It is unfortunate that such incidents are recurring. It affects the credibility of the entire police force,” another officer remarked.
