Vijayawada: Hyderabad-based Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute formally commenced on Friday construction of its new cancer care facility in Amaravati.

Hospital chairman and actor-politician Nandamuri Balakrishna launched the construction works amid traditional rituals and high drama.

The popular actor turned out to be a major attraction at the inaugural event by personally operating a hydraulic excavator to excavate soil and load it into a tipper truck, drawing cheers from those gathered at the venue.

Addressing the gathering, Balakrishna said the hospital, being established in memory of his mother Nandamuri Basavatarakam, would be developed in two phases. The first phase will comprise building of a 500-bed super-speciality cancer hospital at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 700 crore.

The Basavatarakam hospital chairman said the Amaravati facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology required for advanced cancer treatment, supported by a team of expert medical professionals.

The cancer hospital is being developed over a sprawling campus of 21 acres in Amaravati.

Balakrishna expressed confidence that the first phase of the project will be completed by 2028 and start extending medical services to patients thereafter.

The hospital chairman announced that a grand programme is being planned in Hyderabad to commemorate the completion of 25 years of the Basavatarakam hospital’s services in the capital city of Telangana.

Among those present on the occasion in Amaravati include Basavatarakam Trust Board member J.S.R. Prasad, COO Raavi Srinivasa Rao, project manager H. Balasubrahmanyeswara Rao, and Kanakadurga Devasthanam chairman Borra Radhakrishna (Gandhi), besides local leaders and a large number of women from Thullur village.
