Jack P Shepherd, who has been playing David Platt on Coronation Street since he was 12, detailed the scary sight after seeing the doctors pull the massive cyst from his neck
Coronation Street legend Jack P Shepherd has revealed he’s had a lump the size of a ‘golf ball’ removed from neck. The actor said the procedure was so gruesome the doctor demanded he didn’t watch.
Jack, 38, who has played David Platt on the soap for for decades, sought medical help when the mass wouldn’t go away. He explained all to on-screen brother Ben Price, who plays Nick Tilsley, and former Corrie favourite Colson Smith, whose character Craig Tinker was killed off last year.
The trio record popular podcast On The Sofa together and Jack spoke about his health scare. He told them: “I don’t know if you saw but you’d be able to go back on the sofa’s Instagram. If you ever see any clips of me and notice that I had a lump at the side of my neck.”
Colson then said: “We used to always talk about the golf ball didn’t we?” before Jack told him: “So I had what I thought was a cyst at the side of my neck.” Then, jumping in, Ben asking his co-star: “What is a cyst, like fluid?”
Long-serving Jack said he thought it was an ingrown hair, but wisely got it checked out: “Yeah, it’s like a sort of build up over time type of thing. If it was an ingrown hair it should have hurt. I went to a doctors and he went yeah it’s a cyst.
“We can whip that out for you they said and I went ‘can you’? He went yeah, I’ll book you in tomorrow 9am. So I go in, get the old injection an he kind of just stabbed me around the neck area five or six times.”
The doctor then told him to look the other way as he removed the cyst – but he saw the reflection of what was going on in a clock on the wall. “When he pulled it out it was massive!” he told his pals. Ben said: “It was like something from another planet.”
Earlier this year Jack and his wife, Hanni Treweek, shared a sweet update as they prepare for the arrival of their first child together. Jack and Hanni worked together on the Cobbles, during her time on the soap between 2018 and 2020, but the pair’s spark begun after they bonded away from the ITV soap set. They bonded at a mutual friend’s wedding and that is where their relationship sparked.
Before he was with Hanni, Jack was in a relationship with Lauren Shippey – who he was with from 2002. The pair share two children together – Nyla and Reuben – but their relationship hit the headlines for the wrong reason in 2010.
In 2010, Jack was hit with scandal when news broke of an affair with sales executive Sammy Milewski. The pair split at the time but eventually got back together and he issued a public apology.
He started playing troubled David at 12 and is now 38. Asked if he could do another 25 years on the cobbles, he told the Mirror: “Yeah. I think if it’s still going on. If ITV’s still going on. If TV exists. Do you know what I mean? If AI aren’t doing the job instead of humans, I don’t know.
“Yeah, I think as long as it’s still going, like say as long as we’re still lucky enough to get the stories and the writers like us and the public like the characters, then yeah. I look at someone like Bill Roache and want to follow in his footsteps. It’s mad to think now that when I started, Helen Worth, she’d just done 25 years. And then I’ve done 25 and she did 50 and then finished, that’s mad, isn’t it?
“But when I started and it’s like Sally Dynever, who’s Sally Webster, obviously when I started, she’d only done like 15 years. But when I started, I remember thinking Sally is massive and has been in it for years, but it’s only 15, which doesn’t seem like a lot to me now. It’s weird, isn’t it?”
