Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard is still feeling “anxious” amid her battle with breast cancer but has shared an “important announcement” on social media which has left fans in tears
Beverley Callard is still feeling “anxious” amid her cancer battle – but has had some good news. The actress, 69, announced earlier this year she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and, along with her husband Jon McEwan, relocated to Ireland around the same time so she could star as Lily Patterson in the RTE soap Fair City.
The soap legend, who is best known for having starred as Liz McDonald on Coronation Street on and off over the course of 30 years, recently completed radiotherapy but is still waiting for further results of scans which medics wanted to have on her stomach.
Speaking in a new video posted to Instagram on Wednesday evening, she said: “Okay, an update. So, I finished work early today, was a good day there. I’ve still got no results of my biopsies from my tummy, so I’m waiting. Obviously, quite anxious, but I’m good. I’m good. Everything is just trucking along.”
But in recent days, Beverley and her husband visited Dublin Dog Hub and she became determined to find a home for a pooch named Elvis after developing a soft spot for him and had been putting the word out constantly on her social media.
She and Jon already have two dogs so her husband was not sure about the idea of adopting him but in her latest post, Beverley revealed and they had decided to take Elvis home after all. She added: “I came home from work today and did get some good news .” Jon said: “I’ve been to Maxi Zoo, and I’ve got a five-meter training lead.
Beverley jumped in with glee: “We’re getting Elvis! Yes!” before Jon jokingly added: “I put my foot down, I got my own way. I knew that we wouldn’t get him, but then we did .”
The pair just have to wait a week or so for their new canine companion to arrive as he is in the process of being neutered and microchipped.
The former I’m A Celeb star finished the update by saying: “We’ll keep up updated…oh dear, what have we done?” before exclaiming: “We’re thrilled, we’re thrilled!” She captioned the post: “Important announcement time, decision made.”
Beverley’s followers were quick to react to the happy post, with one writing: “actually crying, so happy for yo,” whilst another said: “He is one lucky little chap, with a lovely Mummy and Daddy and playmates.”
A third wrote: “Fantastic news xx. The excitement is unreal so happy for you both x. Pray y hear soon re the results and you have Elvis to keep your mind off things.”
The adoption of Elvis comes just days after the actress told fans that she had to rest after lost consciousness on set and she had been left with no choice but to cancel plans, but had already made a commitment to visit the dogs home in the first place.
She said: “Well, you’ll be all pleased to know I’ve been resting like that. And, which to be honest, I do apart from going to work. I’ve got no social life, and my life is on hold. But I can’t not go to work. “We’ve cancelled everything aside from one commitment I’d made, which I couldn’t let them down.” Beverley then revealed to her fans that she and her husband Jon were at a dog sanctuary.
What followed was various clips of Beverley, who already has two dogs, trying to persuade her husband to take another one home. They both took to one in particular called Elvis but in the end, Jon exclaimed: “We’ve got enough dogs!”
