Chennai: The counting of votes for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections held on April 23 will be taken up on Monday at 8 am for the 234 constituencies in what could be an unpredictable battle as pollsters have come out with widely varying predictions. The outcome will show if it was a regular fight between the DMK and the AIADMK or if a new force in actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged in the state political scenario.

The results will also set the stage for future political changes and alignments in the Dravidian heartland. If the TVK emerges as a powerful force with a good share of votes, Tamil Nadu will be one state where three regional parties hold sway and all national parties including the BJP and Congress may become insignificant. Besides, the TVK will be the first party to gain prominence without the ‘Dravidian’ prefix and focusing on Tamil identity.
The DMK, which entered the election process in 1957 winning 15 of the 205 constituencies, is looking for a second term in power with the narrative of the BJP trying to set up a puppet government in Tamil Nadu under AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and the war cry of ‘Tamil Nadu will fight and Tamil Nadu will win” in a ‘Delhi Vs Tamil Nadu battle’.
The exit polls foresee a DMK win with varying numbers of seats from 110 to 169 in the 234-member House in which 118 makes the majority. Most of the pollsters predict that the party will cross the majority mark on its own or reach 150 which will be a comfortable number.
The AIADMK had lost two Lok Sabha elections and an Assembly election after Mr Palaniswami emerged as the leader and only a couple of surveys predict its return to power while a few surveys say it would lag behind the TVK. The AIADMK, despite claims of carrying the legacy of DMK founder C.N. Annadurai, avoided core ideological issues and carried out a campaign focused on law and order, liquor, drugs besides promising freebies. It remains to be seen if the AIADMK returns to power, retains the opposition slot or loses its votes to Mr Vijay’s party to become a third force at least in Chennai and a few districts.
The TVK issued a manifesto similar to the DMK but its leader Vijay’s campaign resembled the AIADMK’s with focus on women’s safety and law and order. But Mr Vijay is seen as a symbol of change in Tamil Nadu politics by his supporters. The NTK too released an election manifesto seeking more powers to the state and a separate Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka but the policies remained on paper since Seeman harped on providing drinking water, education and medical facilities to the people.
The counting of votes recorded in all the 75,064 polling stations and postal ballots received, will be conducted at 62 designated counting centres. The counting will start at 8.00 am with the postal ballot counting and followed by EVM counting at 8.30 am. The round-wise results of all the constituencies will be announced by the returning officer concerned using the public address system at the respected centre and the same will be reflected in the ECINET app. The results could also be viewed from the portal results.eci.gov.in
